Ted Cruz: Less limits on campaign donors equals more sway for conservative activists

BARRINGTON, N.H. (AP) – Unlimited political cash would give rank-and-file conservative activists greater sway in picking their representatives, including the president, White House hopeful Ted Cruz told New Hampshire voters on Sunday.

Cruz, a first-term senator who represents Texas, said deep-pocketed donors should have the same rights to write giant campaign checks as voters have to put signs in their front yards. Both, Cruz said, are an example of political speech, and he added that "money absolutely can be speech."(continued)

Exactly, which is why John McCain worked so hard to get his “campaign finance reform enacted” and why he and the democrats blew a gasket when the Supreme Court gutted it.

I have mixed feelings regarding unlimited campaign contributions. Even if all of the arguments claiming that money = speech are perfectly valid, it could be that the outcome is still bad.

Most of the people and corporations with large sums of money are not friendly to conservatism. They may be somewhat friendly to libertarianism, but they certainly don't support social conservatives, populist conservatives or traditional conservatives of the sort that Russell Kirk was.

Large amounts of money spent by large corporations and successful billionaires might lead to lower corporate income taxes, less regulation, freer trade, etc. But it will also lead to the complete enshrinement of gay marriage, abortion on demand, government provided health care, speech suppression, government/corporate spying, etc.

If a person wants to give a candidate every single penny he owns, who is to say he can’t do so? It’s nobody else’s business.

The amount individuals can give should be limitless.

Corporations and unions should be banned from contributing.

If we could get the US to declare that corporations are not legal persons, or are not legal persons with respect to elections then I would have far fewer doubts.

It would be interesting if corporations, unions, non-profits, churches, PACs, political parties, etc. were all declared non-persons as far as campaigns were concerned.

Then the only money that could go to campaigns would be that from individuals. The corporations, unions, churches, PACs, etc. could encourage individuals to give money to particular candidates or causes, but couldn't collect, bundle, or offset any funds.

” Our billionaires vs. their billionaires.”

The Left has far more billionaires than we do. We only have a couple.
