Cruz: School choice is 'most compelling civil rights issue' of the century

Texas Sen. Ted Cruz called school choice the greatest civil rights issue of the 21st century.

Texas Sen. Ted Cruz called school choice "the most compelling civil rights issue of the 21st century" and suggested it will be a significant focus of the Senate Judiciary Committee's subcommittee on the Constitution, civil rights and human rights when he becomes chairman in the new Congress.

The potential GOP presidential contender made the remarks during a Senate hearing on community policing, scheduled in the wake of racial protests sparked by the deaths of two unarmed African-American men at the hands of white police officers.

New Jersey Sen. Cory Booker and Minnesota Rep. Keith Ellison, both African-American, and Illinois Rep. Luis Gutierrez, who is Latino, offered testimony during the hearing on the ways in which an uneven application of the law has impacted their respective racial communities. Each Democrat punctuated their testimony with stories of their own encounters with discrimination.

But Cruz, in opening remarks before those three panelists spoke, highlighted school choice — a phrase typically used by conservatives to connote the expansion of charter school programs — as a key civil rights issue....

Remember kids, that the Democrats of today are like the Democrats of old. They firmly oppose school choice for minority and poor children, leaving them to the devices of failed public schools and common core(generational victimhood, while sending their children to elite private schools and Ivory Tower Colleges.

This isn’t directed at Cruz specifically, but I abhor when politicians use superlatives and hyperbole to discuss matters of opinion and weight on political issues. You just make yourself look a fool.

Parental rights are very high up on the list of important things.

But I would reserve the superlatives the Senator uses for the abortion holocaust which has now eradicated upwards of sixty million innocent little American children.

Senator Cruz said that

the most compelling civil rights issue of the 21st century is the the need to expand school choice and educational options so that every child, regardless of race ... has a fair opportunity to receive an excellent education.

Cruz uses strong language to get attention. We need to address what social justice really is, giving everyone the best opportunity, not following the example of the past fifty years, which was race pimping and building dependency on government and the taxpayer.

And this is a federal matter how exactly? We can condemn Common Core as a federal intrusion into local education decisions. This is no different.

School choice is not a good thing. It allows students whose parents who won't take accountability for their neighborhood schools to send them to someone else's schools. Then you end up with closed neighborhood schools and all the young ones from fragile neighborhoods going to someone else's local schools.

What's wrong with going back to community accountability?

Ted Cruz has this one wrong. The civil rights issue that would matter is making sure minorities remain minorities and recognize that with their rights come responsibilities.

School choice is IMO for all, either for public, charter, private or homeschool. Home schoolers should get the amount that is givingout to other students.

In the right hands, I wouldn't mind it being a federal issue. States Rights is not a panacea.

School choice makes the school board accountable to the parents. That's a good thing.

Have you ever seen the effects of school choice, when less motivated students transfer into more motivated schools? They bring their attitudes and behaviors with them.

It's just not true all the time that failing schools fail because of lousy teachers and lousy administration. Sometimes it's that there are so many impediments to enforcing rules and standards.

There is really only one source of opposition to school choice: socialism.

And there is no honest moral defense for such an ideology.

Failing schools fail because of the way centralized control broadly funnels stupid ideas in a top down manner, and the corrupting effect of unions like the NEA.

failing schools fail because of...stupid ideas...

When you move the problem children from the fragile neighborhoods, they bring with them the stupid stuff that made their neighborhood schools impossible to run. They also redirect the learning in that classroom to their needs and cultural expectations.
