McCain says he's likely to run in 2016 despite Tea Party 'target' on his back
The Hill's Campaign Blog ^ | November 12, 2014 | Jonathan Easley

Sen. John McCain (R-Az.) said Wednesday he’s planning on running for reelection in 2016.

“We’ve already talked with finance people in the state, we’ve already talked to different groups and organizations ranging from the Arizona Chamber to the Southern Arizona Defense Alliance to build the coalitions we need to build,” McCain told MSNBC News.

The 78-year-old, five-term Republican senator, who has at times clashed with Tea Party conservatives, said he fully expects a challenge from the right.

“You have to hope for the best and prepare for the worst,” he said to MSNBC. “I definitely think that I would have to absolutely anticipate a Tea Party candidate or two or three ... everybody tells me that I’m the number one target of the tea partiers.” Last year, McCain, the Republican Party’s 2008 presidential nominee, infuriated some conservatives when he called Sens. Rand Paul (R-Ky.) and Ted Cruz (R-Texas) “wacko birds.” He later apologized.

Paul and Cruz are both considered potential 2016 presidential candidates.

McCain’s likely presence in the next election cycle is good news for Republicans who will face a difficult map in 2016. He’s a known quantity, and the GOP dominated the midterm elections in 2014 thanks in part to the group of steady candidates it put forward.

If McCain can get through the primary in Arizona, he may be in good shape — he’s never had a true general election scare and Arizona hasn’t sent a Democrat to the Senate since 1988.

McCain’s Senate colleague, Sen. Jeff Flake (R-Az.), is up for reelection in 2018.

He should gracefully wrap up his career....write a book or two, and do some CNN shows. There are plenty of better candidates from Arizona to replace him.

Of course he will. Which is a good thing because he’ll draw money away from the other RINOs.

His ascendency in a couple cycles ago was primarily due to a single very wealthy individual deciding to support him.

I don’t think all that many people want a man who was already senile in 2008 and 73 years old, to run again at 81. He couldn’t campaign for himself, he lost to Bush in 2000, etc. I think Scott Walker could crush him if Walker runs. Walker would have a lot to talk about regarding his battle with unions in his own state, including attempts to recall him as governor, which failed.

He meant his senate seat, not the presidency.

I was interrupted on my last post-

the rest of my thought, I heard caller earlier on one of the conservative radio shows, speculating that McCain should run, so as as to burn DNC money. Either supporting, opposing or both for his run.

Is McSally a negative ace (five losses) like McStain?

McPain's retirement will be a net positive, despite the entertaining fact that Rush Limbaugh does him so well.

His time in the Hanoi Hilton, has scrambled what few brain cells he has.

I’d much rather see Lt. Col. Allen West as President, man has a backbone where terrorist are concerned and the experience. Palin would have been a great VP but both parties have already ruined her chances.

We need a Constitutional CONSERVATIVE as well as a Fiscal CONSERVATIVE in both slots.

Mike Lee. I like Dr Carson, but this about face on guns is a worrisome thing. He could always go back to being against guns.

I wonder if this announcement is to block Sarah from considering to run in AZ?
