Pelosi: Oh, this minimum wage thing is happening, just get ready
Hot Air ^ | February 22, 2013 | Erika Johnsen

For a moment there the other week, I was kind of thrown by President Obama’s SOTU suggestion that we hike the minimum wage, and I chalked it up to just another lame, old-and-tired faux-stimulus type of suggestion for growing the economy. As Allahpundit already pointed out yesterday, however, it’s really so much more than that. In the run-up to the 2006 midterms, a minimum wage increase was one of the specific issues Democrats used in their collective campaign to take over the House — and in their desperate upcoming bid to win back the House in 2014, they are ready and rarin’ to use the highly populist issue as a fan to flame that whole “protecting rich people is the only thing binding the GOP together” narrative into which they are once again venturing. (Although, they may not even get the chance to make it a campaign issue, ugh.)

In an interview with Greg Sargent at WaPo today, House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi affirmed DCCC chair Steve Israel‘s comments about the Democrats’ incoming minimum-wage strategery:

In an interview with me, Nancy Pelosi summed up the message Dems used against Republicans in 2006, and will again use in 2014: “Just keep it simple. We want to raise the minimum wage, and you don’t. Why not?”

… Pelosi tells me she would much prefer that Republicans agree to raise the minimum wage before it ever becomes a campaign issue, but if they don’t, Democrats will rerun the 2006 minimum wage playbook — and that if anything, it will be worse this time, because it encapsulates the argument the parties have been having in the years since the financial crisis heightened public awareness about inequality. …

Note to Republicans:

Double down, have the House pass $20/hour
“Make everybody middle class law”

Dare the Senate to move it to Baraq’s desk.

How about the Republicans just come out and explain to the American public that THIS IS MERELY A DEMOCRAT TACTIC TO GARNER VOTES IN 2014?

How about a Republican come out and say "We don't need to pay illegal aliens more.. We need to RESTORE THE MIDDLE CLASS AMERICAN JOBS THAT 0BAMA HAS DESTROYED."

She is a master at this crap.
She jacked the last minimum wage and excluded American Somoa where she and hubby were heavily invested in agricultural crops.

This witch is passing laws that put her and hubby in the catbird seat as to pricing.

To bad that middle class non union folks whose wages are not tied to the minimum wage, and the poor get screwed.

The witch is the very poster child for corruption in DC.

I agree that minimum wage is what Pelosi should be earning.

Pelosi was Speaker in 2007 when the minimum wage was last increased. By the end of that year we were in a recession.

Can we just eliminate the federal minimum wage? Please? Let the states demonstrate the efficacy of a minimum wage. Allow federalism to bloom!

How did that woman reach such a position?

I would bet that she assumed a lot of positions, most likely under a desk, aka The Original Monica.

On her saying that the minimum wage raise is going to happen, let's make sure that the new wage if passed also applies to American Samoa.

The best way to raise wages, minimum and otherwise, is to have a robust economy.

My wife and I moved from the People’s Republic of Massghanistan after I retired to the Free and Great State of Texas. Here are a few observations:

Everything on Massachusetts is crumbling because of the state law requiring all contractors working on state projects (such as road repairs and construction) be paid “the prevailing wage”. That means the union wage with union rules. If you drive past a “Men Working” sign in Massachusetts, you will be hard pressed to find a person breathing let alone working.

In Texas there is plenty of construction—roads, buildings, houses, etc. That construction takes maybe six weeks to permit and two months to build a building a bit longer to build a road. In Massghanistant it takes years to obtain the permits to build anything.

There is commerce here every where I look. People are employed in all sort of enterprises.

My wife and I stoped at a Dairy Queen the other day. Each table had a plasticized card with a “Help Wanted” ad. The ad said that the starting wage was $10.00 and hour. Why can Dairy Queen pay that as the minimum wage here in Austin? Answer: They have to to attract employees who would otherwise work elsewhere for that starting wage.

In Massachusetts there is little commerce. The economy is in the tank. Rather than deal with making Massghanistan more business friendly, Governor Dufus Patrick, a/k/a Mini O, and the Socialists in the state legislature think they can improve the lot of people in Massachusetts by raising the minimum wage by fiat!

That is why I am a recovering Masshole. It’s great to be back in Texas.

I think the long range game plan is to force inflation....inflation will whittle away at the deficits and the debt.....but I’ll kill the workers and the savers....won’t hurt the people who collect bonuses and have guarentteed inflation raises...

Yep. Your fixed mortgage will be quite a comfort for you in the coming years. I am going to refi soon for the third time in 4 years. If you do it, keep their profit very low by limiting the loan to what it is currently. If they want to add a thousand or so but you can cut that rate .5%, go for it.

Well seeng how we no longer have an opposition party in this country because the GOP doesn’t have the balls to stand up to Obama because they think he’s universally loved, she’s probably right.

The sad thing, the thing that angers me and probably so many others on this site, is that two years ahead of time, they are telegraphing their strategy and the republicans will just shrug and say “that’s a dumb strategy, it will never work”.

There is not a single reason in the world to sink to their pandering level, but there is every reason to prepare for it and respond vigorously when it is rolled out. Something as simple as pointing out “increasing the minimum wage won’t help the XX million Americans who can’t get a job or the YY Americans who have left the workforce entirely since this Administration has been in office.”

Commission a study on how the last increases in the minimum wage have affected employment rates and household income, be armed with the truth and don’t hold your fire, don’t just expect that being on the right side of the truth is enough to win support, you have to pull others to you.

Great ideas...unfortunately, the Marxists would have that Repub spokesperson labeled a 1%er racist before the press conference (which wouldn't be covered by the MSM) was even over.

I don't think the truth matters to the low/no info average Joe, anymore.
