I wonder if he tweaked her initially because he thought he could win this media fight (in the interest of working an angle for Rob Portman) or if he tweaked her because he didnt expect any pushback from Palin and other conservatives, including his own daughter. A poor calculation from DC either way.
Not especially convincing, but damage control rarely is:
It wasnt aimed so much at Governor Palin as it was against the basic process that McCain used my point basically dealt with the process in terms of that basic requirement, is this person prepared to step in to be president of the United States when theyre picked? And it was my judgment I was asked if I thought the McCain process in 08 had been well done or was it a mistake and I said I thought it was a mistake. Thats not meant so much as a criticism of Governor Palin as it is that I just thought it was not the process didnt meet the standards I would like to see our candidate pursue when they pick a a running mate.
Is that really much of a walkback? Watch the key bit below from the original interview. My point in our last post about this was that he probably didnt mean the initial criticism as personally as it ended up sounding; I took it as more of a critique of nominating any VP with two years experience rather than of Palin. I think thats what hes getting at here, but his basic argument that that means she shouldnt have been the pick is essentially intact. Guess well see more of where hes going with this tonight.

I will wager she gave him an earful about that.Darth Vader or not.
...my guess is PALIN will be a speaker at the convention.
“Misfire”
TT
Not much of a walk back, IMO. Lost all kinds of respect for Cheney. It was an unneeded shot.
Hope so
Palin wasn’t the issue, McCain was...
That explains your lack of perspective.
It was absolutely a mistake. McCain's process didn't produce a winning ticket, it cost Palin her governorship, nearly destroyed her family financially and ruined her children's privacy. "Mistake" is being kind.
She left the state of Alaska in better shape after two years than he left the US after eight years.
McCain, by himself, was not a winning ticket, no matter whom else was one the ticket. Had Gov. Palin not been on the ticket, McCain would have lost by an even greater margin.
Love your tagline..it’s true..
That would sure make the convention worth listening to.
As an older, deeply embedded Republican politician, Cheney may not be able to understand why American voters selected an inexperienced unknown who did nothing but espouse the most vague nothings instead of selecting a war hero with decades of public service, widespread recognition, and a reputation of being his own man (a “maverick”). If the current Republican party leadership doesn’t understand why this occurred, they are way off in prepping for the next election.
Here are som hints regarding 2008: A barrage of leftist media propaganda, leftist education, and widespread gov’t program dependency.
One more hint: Palin saved you from a worse defeat.
One piece of advice for campaign 2012: Running a 1990’s campaign with the main tactical approach being “don’t offend anyone” will not win the election. You have to get the voters’ attentions, simply and personally. Something like, “You and I are America—My opponent is Greece.”
Are you calling Sarah fat?? ; ) hehehehe teasing.
the elitist old guard has worked over time to take Sarah, Michelle, Col Allen West etc out of the equation.
Instead they want to hang on to their rich power and pockets whilst getting some on talk radio and TV to sell their crap to us.
Sadly it works on many and that proof is our last primary.
...my guess is PALIN will be a speaker at the convention.
You are probably correct. Palin talks about the convention and her possible speaking role in this video beginning about the 3:45 mark.

Cheney lost me as a buyer of his autobiography. Sad.
Cheney took a shot at Palin to help Dewhurst and hurt Cruz, how’d that work out Dick.
Now he wants to move on, time to retire Dick. Please go away and take the Bush family with you.
He really doesn’t need this political grief; too much stress. . . but, really Sarah WAS/IS more qualified than either one of what we have. Surely Cheney doesn’t think those two are ALL THAT . . .
Walk-back, my gluteus maximus! Cheney can talk plainer than that! For my money, he only made it worse! His high and mighty pronouncement that, in effect, if McLame’s selection process had been any good he never would have picked Palin because she was not qualified to be POTUS? Sarah Palin is more qualified to be POTUS than either Bob Dull or Juan McLame!
Palin will be there after the Dewhurst wipeout in Texas. Mitt can’t ignore the Tea Party influence. Maybe some in the republican party are beginning to see the light.
Dittos.
Reading Cheney’’s spin gave me vertigo.
LOL!
Many conservatives would have just stayed home, once it became clear that The Grand Old Plantation was just going down the list of old RINOs whose "turn it was" to run for the White Hut.
1996: Bob Dole
2008: Juan McCain
2012: Mittens Romney
They snuck GW Bush in, but nobody knew he was a "progressive" RINO.
Was/is Juan ready to step into the office?
I like Cheney and I like Palin. Rather than blame Cheney, I’ll just go on blaming John McCain for everything that’s gone wrong in the last 5 years. If his massive ego hadn’t pushed him to jump into that race, we might’ve actually had a chance to stop Obama before he got started. Everyone else who ran last cycle was a better candidate than him. It wasn’t Palin that sunk that ship. It the stench of McCain being about a decade past due.
well it is still a back-handed slap at Palin. So Cheney is wrong on this one. No one is perfect. He still has a better batting average than Romney or Obama.
Cheney was off his game. His proper - - and far more accurate - - response should have been: “Well, clearly, Governor Palin was more qualified for the job of President than some community organizer from Chicago who was in the US Senate barely long enough for a cup of coffee, but I’m not certain she was the best choice for the McCain ticket.”
It still would have been wrong, and a (rather soft) slap at Palin, but Cheney would have come off better, IMO.
I’ll piggy back off of your comments...”Cheney was off his game” and he would have been more accurate by acknowledging Gov Palin’s experience compared to the current “bad joke” in the White House.
But, why didn’t the “Dick” ever really drill down on the comparison? Nah, he didn’t and neither did the rest of the “no nothing RHINO” crowd. NO ONE, in the Grand Old Party of pansies, hammered down in 2008 nor will they in 2012. “Gut it up”, you bible loving “Gomers”, we are here..and!
Though, we note “the Dick’s” health issues took obvious precedence, the “Dick” has a new heart! Yippee! With a second chance at life, why not make right instead of doubling down on f—king stupid and wrong once again?
Why disparage and “gun down” a solid, God fearing woman and a patriot of this country during an interview or worthless conversation with the “Screech”? The answer is...They are all smoking, collecting, spending and having a really good time while collecting dimes off my back! Notice...I did not say “your backs”!
I submit this...Look at my damn tag line...It is from Cheney’s speech! I believe in god our father. I don’t believe gray/grey... I believe in good and bad, good and evil, both exist. My tag line died when “the Dick”” went RHINO, and I ask your forgiveness.
I will not vote, I will not accept your scorn, i will not chose your stupid path...You don’t need my one vote...But, you RHINO’s need so so so many more!
g-luck.!
