Pennsylvania may undo Obama
The Pittsburgh Post-Gazette ^ | July 5, 2012 | Sam Rohrer and Colin Hanna

Posted on 07/05/2012 4:40:08 PM PDT by 2ndDivisionVet

The Obama-Biden campaign bus tour rolling through Pennsylvania this week, about four months before Election Day, illustrates that the road to re-election runs through the Keystone State.

Many political analysts believe that President Barack Obama cannot win without Pennsylvania, so it would seem self-evident that the state should get considerable attention from both campaigns in the upcoming election. Instead, Pennsylvania has been downgraded by some pundits and may have been dropped from the list of top-priority swing states by the Romney campaign.

We believe that's a mistake, and that Pennsylvania instead is poised to become the Ohio or Florida of 2012 -- the battlefield that decides the outcome of the presidential race.

A recently released Quinni- piac poll found Mr. Obama leading by a comfortable 6 points in a head-to-head matchup in Pennsylvania, while also showing that he has only a 46 percent job-approval rating. That's in the danger zone for any president seeking re-election, and the fact that it's exactly the same number as his support base suggests that he may not have much upward room in which to move.

Historically for presidents seeking a second term, the Gallup Presidential Approval Rating is more predictive than early head-to-head polling numbers, and not a single president has been reelected with an approval rating of less than 49 percent since Gallup began reporting that number in 1948 (Truman vs. Dewey). If that number gets any lower in Pennsylvania than its current 46 percent, Mr. Obama's vulnerability will be clearly documented, and Pennsylvania will fit any definition of a full-fledged swing state.

Those who suggest the GOP should cede the Keystone State to Mr. Obama are turning their backs on a real opportunity...

The “bitter clingers” of Pennsylvania will again lick obama’s boots and vote for him.

Realistically, Obama will carry Pennsylvania barring a big change in the race. He’s polling well ahead of Romney already, the demographics there are in his favor (which is why he’s polling well ahead of Romney), and Romney’s not really going after it. Look at Ohio and Virginia instead.

Obama would have lost PA in 2010.

PA elected a republican governor, republican senator, took over the state house/senate by large margins and elected republican state supreme court justices.

We now have voter ID law. Philly is quiet and has been cut free from the feeding tit of Harrisburg.

The idiot white guilt voters in the suburbs now do NOT find obama so kewl anymore.

Obama loses PA in November. If I am wrong, I will make an extra $100 donation to the Boy Scouts AND Free Republic.

Our Republican governor, congress and senate passed a voter id law. That should take at least some fraud out of this year’s election.

I agree. PA is fool’s gold for the GOP. Total waste of time for the Romney team.

The voter ID law was the "compromise" for not changing the electoral vote allocation system (2 for the statewide winner, 1 for the winner of each congressional district) when the GOP could have done so last fall.

We had solid majorities in both houses and a GOP governor committed to signing it into law if passed.

The main thing which stopped it was last minute arm twisting by GOP Chairman Rob Gleason who feared it would dilute his standing in the national party.

Ask yourself what kind of idiot throws away 10-16 electoral votes in any close election in exchange for all 20 in an occasional blow-out election where they wouldn't be needed anyway.

Gleason needs to be told by the GOP rank and file that he is gone if Pennsylvania fails to deliver 20 GOP electoral votes in an economy this week and a Democrat President this bad.

I sure hope that was an internal poll. Imagine more than a few of us messing with their heads...priceless.

It's Pittsburgh & Phillie that are the concerns.

Agreed and I will do the same. Filthydelphia is still a problem. I hate watching the returns every election. They are always the last to be counted (we know why) and have 105% turnout. I don't think PA is a given for TOTUS this time around.

They say Romney is down 9 points in Ohio and fading. If he can’t take OH he sure can’t take PA.

110% in Philadelphia and Allegheny county or whatever number is needed to disenfranchise the “T”.

Joe Biden made a recent appearance at Pittsburgh's St. Patrick's Day parade. There was tension in the crowd. The Secret Service got freaked at some point and had the clown running down the street for his safety.

What I keep seeing in all these states where the populace is really hurting and do not want to vote for Obama, is that Romney hasn’t provided voters with reasons to vote for him!
