Newt Gingrichs family values have been the subject of much attention during the GOP primary race, and on his show today, Chris Matthews highlighted a poll which showed roughly half of the respondents rated Gingrichs personal standards poorly. Mathews asked panelist Andrew Sullivan if the GOP establishment still retained enough clout to heavily influence the race going forward, given the concerns they have about a Gingrich candidacy.
Sullivan argued the establishment has lost control of its tiger, or rather, its populist religious base, and theyre worried that the tiger will end up turning on them this time. Times Mike Duffy made the observation that no big-name Republican governors have come out to help Romney or stump for him, though Matthews pointed out a few of these Republican governors have their own problems to deal with. Duffy also noted that every time Romney sends out a spokesperson to argue on his behalf, it reminds voters that Romney is being supported by the Republican old guard, and hes the candidate of choice for the establishment.
Kathleen Parker brought up Gingrichs reaction to the audience at last weeks NBC debate being silenced, suggesting he only does well when he gets to feed off the energy of a crowd. But geographically speaking, Parker thought Gingrich was only doing well in places like South Carolina and Florida was because theyre Southern states and Gingrich is a familiar face to many in that region of the country.
Matthews wondered if the establishment would have any power to stop Gingrich following Florida. Sullivan expressed his doubts.
I dont think they can because the people behind him are the Fox News viewers and the talk radio listeners, and that is the Republican establishment.
Sullivan predicted that if Newt Gingrich captures the GOP nomination, Ron Paul will end up running as a third-party candidate and expected such a race to be a realignment election.

Fox News supports Gingrich? He must be in time warp or watching a different Fox News. They are in the tank with Romney. And I haven’t heard any talk radio hosts actually come right out and endorse Gingrich.
Sorry, not me! But not only is Little Andy a major creep, he’s a major British creep. He needs to go home.
This is what happens when you subject yourself to a lifelong habit of buggery and fluffing.
GO NEWT! GO SOCIAL CONSERVATISM!
I hope he is right
No, the reference was of the audience of Faux News, and the audience of radio talk, and that is correct that these audiences find Romney abhorrently Establishment, and that Ron Paul will run Third Party.
I believe this will happen also. We finally get our face off with the RINO Establishment, to stuff their cram down, “moderate-whose-turn-has-come” candidate, back down there throat. Ron Paul knows this and that the time has come for a re-allignment of Republicans, but we are left with Obama likely re-elected. Pathetic future any way we slice it.
Yeah...Fox has really lost it. They are totally in the tank for Romney. Which means they likely want four more years of Obama.
After Obama’s reelection, wonder what Fox says when The Won cancels the 22nd Amendment with an executive order...and runs for his third term.
2016 looks like Obama/Jeb race...and nobody would care who wins. It just the same ol’ good ol’ boys raping the taxpayers again, and again, and again.
I get worried when I start getting rays of sunshine from Andrew Sullivan.
It’s jabberwocky because Andrew’s had his noggin rammed into the headboard one-too-many times.
Thanks RitaOK. It just didn’t register with me when I first read it. Yes, the audiences. Well, we definitely need a shake out.
Today, the FNC "All Stars" declared begrudgingly, that they had "pronounced Newt dead more than once," but like the Energizer Bunny, he just keeps going.
They were glad that there wouldn't be another debate or primary until mid February, that Newt would surely run out of money (not so for Mitt's millions.)
Those listeners are NOT the establishment. So Sullivan sounds drunk again.
Tru dat.
Something I missed was, according to Sullivan, that the Third Party business of Ron Paul occurs if NEWT is the nominee. He didn’t say anything about if Romney is the nominee there will be a Third Party.
Why would Ron Paul care who the nominee is. He is simply racking up delegates to take with him; the requisite number is the key, not *who* the nominee is. ???
This lady-boy has it way wrong. Talk radio may be keeping an “open mind” on the GOP primary, but it’s listeners are definitely NOT the GOP establishment. They are active conservatives.
Fox News is pro-Romney, and has been for half a year.
Ailes said it himself: he wants Obama re-elected because that will mean 4 more years of higher ratings. If a Republican gets elected president, Fox News ratings will go down.
Hillarious! And...true!
