Jim Palin met both me and calamari for the first time at lunch last month at Evangelo’s, the best Italian restaurant in Wasilla, Alaska. Jim Palin, Todd’s father, has been hunting and fishing in his state for almost 50 years, but somehow he had never crossed paths with a squid, alive or fried. As for reporters from the “lamestream media,” he had met a few, but had never actually sat down to break bread with one before.
I had come to lunch hoping to learn a little about Jim’s elusive son, Todd—a figure of enduring fascination who just might, if Sarah Palin decides to make a presidential run, become the country’s first first husband.
Jim Palin, retired general manager of the local electric company and a Phil Donahue look-alike, talks about how Todd won Alaska’s Iron Dog snowmobile race four times—making him a legendary local badass. We talk about his son’s basketball prowess—Todd was a star on the boys’ varsity in Wasilla, and played for Missouri Valley College—and how he would fare in a one-on-one matchup with the president. “Up against Obama?” Jim’s blue eyes sparkled behind his bifocals. “Interesting question. Let’s just say that Todd would handle himself pretty well.” What Jim doesn’t much want to discuss is Sarah’s political career. He says that he will, of course, support Sarah if she runs. I love how the writer uses the term “Palin compound” like she’s Osama Bin Laden or something. I mean, compond is only used with terrorists or the Kennedys after the rape case back in the 90s.
Not positive though to see his father say he doesn’t think she’ll run. When you hear similar things from Franklin Graham and Greta Van Susteren it adds up.
That was all before Huckabee stood down, though. Things are a bit easier without him in the race. I think she’s reluctant and she’d rather have someone one she could support. But I still think she has the drive and ambition. I think she’ll wait until the summer and if no one has really taken off and things still look open, I could see her getting in.
I’ve always found Todd interesting. I don’t want to use the term whipped but he always seems rather differential and subdued around her. Maybe it’s just that quiet strength, stoicism. They seem such opposites personality-wise.
Ever hear about the Obama compound in Chicago? The Clinton compound in Chappaqua? The Bush compound in Crawford or Kennebunkport? The McCain compound in Sedona? Both Bush, McCain and Reagan for that matter all had “ranches”. Newsweek says Palin has a compound like she’s living in Abbotabad or something.
No wonder Sarah or Todd didn’t want to talk to him. He sure makes a lot of ASS umptions don’t he?

They aren't living separate...they have separate wings for their separate activities...
she does her broadcasting from the main building - that takes up room. He does things, like his plane and snow ‘machines’ that require a lot of maintenance - noisy, dirty maintenance.

And you notice he used the worst photo I've ever seen of Todd. You'd have to work hard to get a bad pic of that man. Another trick the lameStream type uses.

And to even insinuate that Todd Palin MIGHT be “whipped” is ridiculous and misogynistic. How many wives go “reluctantly” into the White House? Including Laura Bush.

well, he said he got the distinct impression and also mentioned hearing from some of Todd’s friends, although they said they were hoping she doesn’t. If they knew one way or the other they wouldn’t be hoping. And it sounds like they think she will or why would they be hoping she doesn’t. If they thought she wouldn’t run there’d be no need to hope.
The bigger ones for me were Greta and Franklin Graham. They know her as well as anyone in the media and have spent time with her and if they don’t think so I think that’s telling. Maybe she’s just at keeping secrets. After all, no one had any clue we were trailing OBL for the last year and were right on his tail.
But the use of the word compound just jumped out at me.

probably the wrong word to use. He just seems so quiet and reserved and she’s the opposite. You’re right that in politics we’re all used to alpha males and more laid back and reserved wives and I guess it just stands out when you see it in reverse.
Anyone who has read Sarah’s books know that Todd is her rock.
Her own Mother and Father said they have no idea as to her poilitcal plans. I believe them, so why should I think Greta or anyone else knows.
I can think of quite a few alpha males who are quiet and reserved. And I can think of even more beta males who are loud and showy.

If I could ask Mrs. Palin wether she wants to be president, I imagine that the answer would be ‘no’.
If I asked her if she thought that she possessed a set of finely honed skills that are perfectly tailored to circumstances at present and that she is being called upon to serve her country at a time of dire need, I think the answer is ‘yes’.
Many people are praying right along with you, Sarah, for guidance and wisdom to face down the tyranny that is at our doorstep.

That’s true and even this guy did not really succeed. The whole article was “Todd’s a nice guy and if Sarah really loves him, although we know that they are living apart on the same property which isn’t kept up very well, she would not run for president”. Snarky, dat!
The left is so afraid of her and of Todd. I hope she runs; who knows, maybe she is our version of Lady Thatcher.
I can’t help but think Sarah would be giving the opposite impression of what she is actually planning. She is not one to tip her hand.
Plus, my thoughts that are she probably would not trust someone with info who would take a reporter on a tour of my home/property without my knowledge! Especially due to the history of the press in her life.

Yeah, it’s misleading. What he meant is that their new building is cut into two. Sarah’s studio and Todd’s garage.
As for Gretta? She wrote that she was sick and tired of being invited everywhere by people hoping to get access to Sarah. Gretta said she really has no connection in that respect. So why would Gretta know?
How well does she really know Franklin? They have been together at crisis situations, perhaps it seemed inappropriate to discuss such things as running for President?
Hey I am in the tank for Sarah 100 %! Will be deeply depressed if she does not!
Now when/if she decides not to run, she should let us no ASAP.
I only have high thoughts of Sarah, so I only assume she has not decided not to run yet, otherwise she would tell us.
I would announce soon if I was her, then possibly Michelle Bachmann would do the right thing and not run.
