Alaskans Standing Together, the independent expenditure committee funded by Native corporations, is handing out temporary tattoos at the Alaska Federation of Natives convention that say "Lisa Murkowski/Write-in for U.S. Senate."
The monochrome tattoos are different from the red, white and blue tattoos that can be spotted on some Murkowski fans -- those are left over from the senator's 2004 campaign. (Check out the eighth photo in this gallery for a smoky example.)
U.S. Sen. Lisa Murkowski is running for re-election as a write-in candidate after losing the GOP primary to Republican Joe Miller, who is backed by the Tea Party Express and Sarah Palin. Democrat Scott McAdams rounds out the current three-way battle. On Wednesday Miller's campaign filed a FEC complaint against Alaskans Standing Together, alleging that the committee has violated federal law by using funds from federal contractors to influence a federal election.
Part of the reasoning behind the fake tats seems to be that voters can wear them into the booth in order to check their spelling when they write-in Murkowski's name. But there are strict rules about electioneering in or near voting locations, so anyone wearing the tattoos would have to keep them discreet.
In an e-mail, elections director Gail Fenumiai said, "Any campaign related material may not be visible within a voting location or within 200 feet of the entrance of a voting location. If such items are seen they will need to be removed."
Staff of Alaskans Standing Together are encouraging voters to make sure their tattoos are under a piece of clothing until they get into the private voting booth.
Steve Wackowski, a Murkowski spokesman, said the campaign has told supporters that once they get within 200 feet of the polling place, all campaigning needs to stop.
Jason Moore, a spokesman for Alaskans Standing Together, confirmed the group printed up the tattoos for the AFN convention. He said he wasn't sure whether the strategy was for the tattoos to be worn prior to the election or if they were meant to be worn into the voting booth, but he agreed that it seemed like a good idea for voters to have something on their arm to help them spell Murkowski's name.
Yes.
Her Alaskan Mafia is nothing more than politicians purchased by moochers from the fedgov.
It’s pretty clear these days.
Anybody see this? Didn’t see it posted.
I saw that somewhere. It’s the most ridiculous thing I’ve ever heard. Does this new rule affect Obama, Clinton and the others?
Come Nov 2nd the majority of Alaskans will rid themselves of the toxic RINO’ism of Lisa Murkowski. She can have her fun now but it has a shelf life and she has damaged her political career for good. Bye Bye.
Only affects our guy. Is a power play, run by the media pigs. Rules never apply to Democrats.
Cannot wait to see her defeated and have to admit her political career is over.
Twit tramp stamps.
She needs to pack it in and get out of the race.
Princess Lisa will go to the courts when she gets whipped like a rented mule 2 November 2010. (With any luck she will get fewer votes than her A hole father did when we kicked his worthless butt to the curb!)
She is execrable filth imo.
Princess Lisa. YOU’RE FIRED!
Again.
(btw; THANKS princess for putting the final nail in the coffin of your ALASKAN political life.)
