Ohio, a traditional bellwether state, will take center stage once again to gauge how the two major parties will fare in 2010, a year Republicans are hoping to make gains in statehouses and congressional seats across the country.
Republicans are looking to defeat Democratic Gov. Ted Strickland with the help of former congressman and Fox News host John Kasich, and win an edge in congressional redistricting in the process.
The Republicans are also playing defense in the state, however, hoping to hold onto the seat being vacated by retiring Sen. George Voinovich a moderate Republican representing a state that broke for President Barack Obama last year.
"When you look at the bigger picture, this is going to be the ultimate litmus test of whether George W. Bush is still a campaign issue for Democrats," said Jennifer Duffy, senior editor for the Cook Political Report.

If I had one wish for 2010 I would hope for Kasich to win the governors race. I’ve always liked him.
He will have a lot of work to do.
Let’s just hope the ghost of Taft has been buried.
i am going to give kasich dough..i hope he wins..
Incidentally, Strickland and Brown didn't "knock off" two Republican incumbents in 2006, just one. Strickland replaced a 'Pub governor who was term-limited. True, Strickland absolutely slaughtered a TrueConservativeTM (so much for the "Conservatism always wins." bromide), but he was not the incumbent Governor.
How about Traficant?
After 2 years of Obama if the GOP loses any race they are total incompetent Boobs.

I talked to two black Republicans at church on Sunday. One is originally from Ohio and said that the social/moral issues are the key to the black vote. He said that when the Marriage Amendment was on the ballot in Ohio, black voters opted for Bush on that issue alone putting Ohio in the win column for us.
Uh, well, uh...
Go right ahead and give him your money. The little back stabbin weasel better hope the ohio gunowners forget he supported the semi auto ban. I have not forgotten. He is not a friend of the 2nd Amendment.
I. Executive Summary
Ohioans are out of work at rates not seen for more than a quarter century. Many who are working have had to accept cuts in pay, reductions in hours or unpaid furloughs. Some have stopped seeking work because they fear no jobs exist, others hang on to part-time jobs though they want and need full-time employment. Wages are not rising, and for black workers, wages have dropped sharply, leading to unprecedented gaps between black and white wages and between the wages of black workers in Ohio and the nation. The dire situation is the result of deregulation, deindustrialization, and a deep recession. Public interventions have averted the worst possible outcome allowing states to meet many of their obligations, extending unemployment compensation benefits, and stimulating the economy. But the federal government must provide further unemployment extensions, additional stimulus, and more aid to the states. Ohio must also modernize its unemployment compensation system and stabilize its own tax system, which has been badly crippled because of the weak economy and bad policy choices.
Out of work
Unemployment rates in Ohio are now at rates not seen in more than a quarter century. Unemployment had hit a fifteen-year high at the end of 2008, with an annual rate of 6.5 percent. By July 2009, the less reliable monthly unemployment rate was more than 1.7 times as high at 11.2 percent, a rate last seen in August 1993.
Amen. It wil be a rough one.
He's not? Good to know.
I NEVER want to see an election in Ohio like the one we had in 2006. EVERY ballot issue was horrible AND amended the state constitution (absurd) — smoking ban, minimum wage, gambling, etc. Way to go, Ohio.
I’m afraid Ohio is lost.
Portman is too weak of a candidate. Possibly Blackwell?
Voinovich and Taft raped the GOP.
I can’t wait to move to Kentucky.
Kentucky is one of four states I have yet to visit. Can’t believe I haven’t been there.
Nice revisionist history, ace.
Does Kentucky vote conservative?
I don’t know. From a distance it seems to. Perhaps MikeWUSAF knows.
You better believe Kentucky votes conservative. Obama didn’t even bother visiting the state during the election.
Well, there you have it. Sounds like a great place.
