Who has the best chance to hold the Senate seat for the GOP?
I dont think it is any of the announced candidates.
Its a member of the Texas congressional delegation, whose members are worried about whether any of the wannabes can hold the seat against a Democrat.
This candidate has a large, enthusiastic constituency that goes beyond the boundaries of his district and his state. This candidate wont have to spend a nickel on name ID. This candidate has $2,742,426 cash on hand. This candidate is totally in touch with the GOP base, as it evolves further and further to the right. This candidate has demonstrated an amazing ability to raise money on the Internet: He raised $4.2 million in a single day during his campaign for president (albeit short of his goal of $10 million).
Its (drumroll) Ron Paul, of course. Actually, Im surprised that Paul hasnt already thrown his hat into the ring. (His son is running for the U.S. Senate in Kentucky.)
Paul is sponsoring a bill to audit the Federal Reserve. It currently has 282 co-sponsors (218 needed for passage). A member of the GOP delegation told me that his office gets more calls about that bill than any other. Barney Frank, the Democratic chairman of the House Financial Services committee, supports the bill and said Friday that it was going to pass the House.
None of the wannabes has a constituency. Their road to the Senate depends upon Hutchisons resigning her seat and Perry bestowing the appointment upon a favored candidate. The only candidate in the current collection who would have a shot to beat Paul would be Dewhurst, because of his money, and Paul is far more popular with the GOP base than the Dew is. He would inflame the base.
Ron Paul is just to exotic to win a Senate seat.
I am voting for Michael Williams for senate in the state of Texas.
wRONg PAUL for moonbat.
Ditto!!!
could be a popular move if Perry appointed him
Is this an appointment? Rick Perry isn’t picking Ron Paul, nice as that would be.
the blogger is speculating at who is the best to keep the seat for the GOP. He concludes the other candidates are vulnerable to the Dems
... especially when it comes to money and name ID
Regardless, Perry is an establishment type and no-doubt the national GOP has their unholy influence involved in the process. Paul is not being appointed.

This special election will be on May 8, 2010 unless the Gov. declares and emergency and sets it earlier. It will be a jungle type race where all candidates run on the same ballot regardless of party. The winner must have a majority, if not a run off is held between the top to vote getters regardless of party affiliation. I don’t think Paul would be that strong statewide.
Yeah, maybe the GOPher should get Bob Dull or McLame, true represenatives.
Paul is not being appointed.
Neither will Paul win a statewide race for senator IMO. He just finished a statewide race in the Presidential Primary and got less than 5% of the vote something less than 70,000 votes. He ran against Phil Gramm for the senate seat back in 1984 and got something less than 60,000 votes. He hasn’t improved his statewide appeal one iota as far as I can tell.
I used to believe the opposition’s clever painting of Ron Paul as a moonbat, too. Now I’m not so sure. He is certainly right about the Federal Reserve System. And I applaud his defense of Individual liberty and his rejection of Collectivism. Just mho.
I would not trust anything written by Paul Burka, or anything else written in the commie rag Texas Monthy.
I agree with nearly everything Ron Paul has said about Fiscal Issues, however he is DEAD wrong about the War on Radical Islam.
Well, that is certainly a pretty poor indicator. Texas' March primary was pretty much once McCain had already won. And races from the first half of the 1980's ain't no better.
Paul got just a few votes over 30,000 in 1988 for President in Texas when he ran as a Lib. candidate. Paul isn’t accepted statewide based upon his prior showings.
In before this turns into an all-out paleo bash thread.
I’d vote for him. After listening to him for a while, I’m convinced that he’s the only guy that will stand up for small government and the Constitution. Am I wrong? Who else is out there in the GOP that is a true constitutionalist anymore?
