State Sen. Sam Caligiuri, who represents the 16th District comprising Southington and Wolcott and parts of Cheshire and Waterbury, has announced his intention to run for the United States Senate in 2010.
To me, building a stronger America and a better Connecticut boils down to one simple question: Can we do better? I know the answer to that question is a resounding yes, which is why Im proud to announce my candidacy for the United States Senate, Mr. Caligiuri said.
With our nation and our state at a crossroads, Connecticut needs a senator committed to reform, grounded in principle, and with the courage to do the right thing regardless of pressure from the left or the right, he added. Simply maintaining the status quo will not make life better for people. To overcome the challenges that confront us, we must change the systems and institutions that no longer work regardless of who supports those entrenched interests.
I am running to take us into the future and away from what Washington has come to represent: career politicians in power for so long, and with so little accountability that they feel they can do or fail to do anything they want and still get elected, Mr. Caligiuri said. Regardless of who my opponent may be, I am committed to changing Washington in ways that career politicians are simply unable to do.
My parents came to the United States in search of economic opportunity and a better quality of life, he added.

He sounds as if he has promise. I wish he had run against Chris Murphy instead of the U.S. Seante.
Well this guy is probably to the right of Rob Simmons, who is polling well, but if Peter Schiff gets in I’ll be rooting for him.
Me too.
voters have not soured on Murphy, yet. Dodd is the better target. Caligiuri is the one i’m supporting.
I wish we had more like him...
bump & a ping
we do have more like him. They run for the legislature and lose 52% to 48% and most conservatives “never even heard that the guy was running.”
Caligiuri’s bio says that his parents are immigrant. However, it doesn’t say where they’re from. Do you know?
Peter Schiff please pick up the white courtesy phone.
Pete is Caligiuri appreciably better than Rob Simmons?
“Pete is Caligiuri appreciably better than Rob Simmons?”
I don’t know for sure. I don’t know a great deal about him.
Italia
Simmons was NARAL endorsed. I am convinced that his brother, the California M.D., has strong planned parenthood connections. Caligiuri is the one of the strongest pro-family Senators. I do not know how he intends to handle the abortion issue in his campaign. That seems to be one of the fractures in this race; pro-family grassroots finds Simmons to be unpalatable.
Many people do expect that Dodd will not be the DEM nominee. But Dodd is not going down without an attempt to rehabilitate himself. (And you thought the real rehab he needed was the alcohol kind.)
Interesting. Are both parents from Italy?
