Huntsville insurance executive Wayne Parker and Huntsville attorney Cheryl Baswell Guthrie will be in a runoff for the Republican nomination for the 5th Congressional District seat.
Parker nearly won without a runoff but didn't quite reach 50 percent of the GOP primary vote Tuesday. The runoff is July 15.
State Sen. Parker Griffith of Huntsville won the Democratic Party primary Tuesday.
The winner of the 2nd District race will replace veteran Democratic U.S. Rep. Bud Cramer, who has represented the district since 1991.
Parker has previously run twice against Cramer.

This race will be vital.
The last Republican to be elected to the Alabama 5th was John Benton Callis in 1867.
This is a very winnable district but alas we have the RNC of fools. So another lost opportunity.
I was with a chamber of commerce group that visited our state senator and the legislature a few weeks ago. We were “treated” to thirty minutes of Parker Griffith’s political ramblings. He is an outright socialist. I was worn out after the talk from practicing the self control that kept me from calling BS about 20 times. We need to help beat this guy.
This runoff is NOT what we need. I fear the Dems will hold this solely because of the status of Griffith as a State Senator.
Great a runoff...
