It was June 2005, and state lawmakers were struggling through a tense special session after the Kansas Supreme Court ordered additional funding for schools.
When the opportunity arose --"when we were not doing anything, which was often the case" -- Jim Barnett, state senator and internal medicine physician, would slip away to his family's farm near Emporia to finish planting soybeans.
His father's death at age 86 the previous month had left the job incomplete.
The hectic pace is not unusual for Barnett, candidate for the Republican nomination for governor.
A senator since 2001, he has continued to see patients even during legislative sessions, sometimes in the evening, and says he would practice medicine while serving as governor.

If Barnett could unseat Kathleen Sebelius, it would prove that liberalism doesn't wash in Kansas.
