Is that the Gaffney who played for Stanford? If it is I think he holds a record of sorts for carrying the ball 41 times in a game. He was also known as a decent baseball player who enjoyed being hit by a pitched ball.
I think OJ ran the ball 47 times in a USC game When asked if he ran OJ too much, legendary coach John Mackay quipped, it’s no like he’s in a union.
One more. After an upset loss to Stanford, MacKay was asked, what did you think of your defense’s execution? MacKay said, I think it’s a good idea.
Some great sports memories: Wilbur Robinson old time manager of the Brooklyn Dodgers and a good catcher was talked into catching a ball thrown from an airplane. The missile was thrown, Robinson gets under it, the grapefruit goes right through his mitt and smashes him in the head. The KOd Robinson wakes up and says, “I woulda caught it except it started raining.”
