For the last event, my son had the absolute best view of anyone on earth of the sun and he missed the eclipse. He works at NASA. At the time, he was a data technician working with the SOHO solar observation satellite and was shooting pictures of the sun. The satellite is about 1,000,000 miles past teh moon, so there was no eclipse for him.
I intend to let the professionals take the photos.
I’ll be in Erie, PA at my wife’s sister’s place.
I’ll just enjoy the eclipse without bumbling around trying to take photos.
You should be able to safely photograph the eclipse at totality, without a filter.
But, ONLY at totality! It’s not safe to look directly at it any other time-you will need a filter in front of your camera lens or to look directly through.
Do NOT look at it directly, before or after totality without some sort of safe filter. It will damage your eyes if you do.
Is eye damage an issue for viewing a non-total eclipse? Like 70-80%?
YES! You need a safe solar filter to look through. Even a strong welder’s glass will work, but it needs to be very very dark.
Do you have filters for your cameras? Unless it’s totally eclipsed by the Moon, the Sun will damage the sensors in your cameras.
AMEN to everything you said! I won’t be traveling to a totality area, but I will be looking at it thru my Herschel wedge.
I have a Questar 3 1/2 telescope with a full aperture solar filter.
It will allow me to watch the moon cross the sun. It will also allow me to see sunspots.
I’ll take it off at totality. Hope I can see some red prominences.
But I better put it back before the end of totality.
So, my paper 3-D glasses will be sufficient, right?
NO, you will damage your eyes! 3D glasses are NOT safe for viewing an eclipse.

You can take a mirror and reflect it onto the side of a building. Works pretty well.
I am sure my wife has an eclipse dress to wear.
NICE! I used to own a 6” Quantum, but sold it years ago. It wasn’t nearly as good as your Questar. I’m planning on observing the Moon’s transit across the Sun with my refractors, a 115 f/7 and either my 80mm or 72mm f/6 scopes. I have Baader solar film for 2 scopes and a Lunt Herschel wedge for the third.
The Sun will be, at maximum, 80-85% covered where I’m at.
Any other day to me. I don’t get this ridiculous “festive” occasion claptrap.
My health care network is mostly shutting down for the day.
Have we ever engaged in this stupidity before?
Another method is to take a cardboard box and tape a sheet of paper inside, then poke a pinhole through the opposite side. Point it at the Sun and it will be projected through the pinhole onto the sheet of paper. One of the oldest, and SAFEST methods of viewing an eclipse.
Well since the left are so great at predicting what the weather will be years from now, maybe they can inform us what it will be a month from now? Cloudy? Rainy? Sunny?
It says in the Bible “the heavens declare the glory of God.” It’s never more apparent than during a total eclipse. It’s absolutely stunning.
Maybe so but it still does not require shutting things down and marketing 4 day hotel stays for eclipse watching.
Geesh people have gotten corny.
But I want to see the sun in 3-D.
