Those bands could ride the subways in a large city together, walk the streets, and have nobody recognize them. For the band members, that was probably more of a good thing than a bad thing.
Corporate Rock.
Good example of power ballads of that era by bands mainly known for "hard rock" is "Beth" by Kiss, "Babe" by Styx, "Waiting For A Girl Like You" by Foreigner.
In concert, these bands would tend to put their ballads towards the end of the show, where everybody would get out their cigarette lighters (this was WAY before smartphone flashlights) and sway to the music with their girlfriends.
All of this started giving way to other genres such as New Wave, where the concert presentations were more visual (fueled by the rise of music videos).
Thanks gator, haven’t heard that one before. Had a James Brown/Latin fusion thing going. Loved the waa and phase shifter in the solo. Schon destroyed Jimmy Crespo that day at the concert. I would have never thought that Journey would sound better than Aerosmith in a million years.
Power Ballads - Because every bad boy has his soft side.
Rock is the artistic expression of the possibilities offered by electronic music.
It started with the electric guitar and bass in the ‘50s, continued development with synthesizers and amplified drum kits, and achieved arena-filling sound with arrays of transistorized power amplifiers and 500 watt horn drivers in the late 70s.
A trio, which could only play to a small room with acoustic instruments in the ‘50s folk music era, could now play to an arena thanks to technology.
Give him a break, A lot of people his age do not know who Journey is by name. He knew the song. Without looking it up, who performed “Soulful Strut.” I know, they are a one hit wonder but their music is used in an ad you heard today. You probably knew the tune, but do not know the name.

Yeah, but we’re talking about Journey
Yeah, probably watching re-runs of "Lawrence Welk" on Channel 7, Saturday night at 8:30 p.m., while lying on your Grandma's sofa, staring at Grandma's snowy 14-inch black&white t.v. - or maybe when watching "The Glenn Miller Story" on Channel 11.
Gronkowski's generation didn't have t.v. - or if they did, they had 2,050 channels to choose from. And each kid had his own set, and so wasn't forced to watch what Grandma wanted to watch.
Regards,
Was MTV even still showing music videos when Gronk was in high school?
Journey was a band eh? Learn something new every day.
Years ago Foreigner, Journey and Night Ranger were touring together. I said they should all switch places...mix up the band members...at least for the April 1st show.
Same for me. Which tells me she's really not this #1 talent despite her massive her revenues. How many parents of kids in the mid 60's couldn't identify a single Beatles Song?
The Beatles...that was that band Paul McCartney was in before Wings, right?
and here I thought he was a solo act playing great cover music.
Excepting for the lead singers, most the audience would never suspect that anyone had been switched around.
He trumped all the rest:
He is a fine hunk of cis male oppressor, is he not? Love your post with the kitten.
And here I thought the embarrassing question was going to be “boxers or briefs” (when it's probably commando...)

I agree. I am getting pretty old lately, but I can truly say that two pop singers I heard—fifty+ years apart while driving the car—made me pull off the road and just listen: 1) Elton John, Your Song, 1969; and 2) Adele, Rolling in the Deep, 2011.
Bot of them, as persons, have turned me right off, especially Adele. But they can sing.
