I recall 2nd Grade Gym, where the boys were told to climb a long, heavy, twisted rope. It hung from ceiling down to about 2 feet from the floor. I didn’t think I could climb, but, I figured there was no other way out than to do it, and I did, faster than expected!

Then, came the need to come down, and give the rope to the next in line.
Only thing is, once I got up there, I began to swing to and fro like a chime in a Grandfather Clock. The teacher had to hold the rope still, or try to, until the momentum stopped.
All the kids were amused to see Mr. (I can’t recall name) skittering back and forth, to still the rope. His gym shoes squeaked loudly on the varnished wood floors. I probably laughed too.

For the rest of the semester, he assumed I was a “Wise Guy” who was “swingin’ like Tarzan’ on purpose.
I stopped trying to say I had no control of it. “Whatever!”

My gym teacher would put on Eurythmics and lead us in aerobics. Was fun. I had my monthly three times a month because I felt awkward showering with others and that was the only way out. She was a nice lady. Encouraged me in gymnastics. Other than that it was sad for me during sports cuz I was always picked last unless one of my two friends were choosing teams. Not sure why the adults allowed the kids to choose.

Gym was hell on earth. Once, a guy took me to a line dancing class on a first (only) date. After about three minutes I left; it was too much like gym class.

Same here. In 7th grade I was sucker punched by a Vietnamese ‘boat person’ while we were playing indoor stick hockey. I learned from this:
1. Vietnam won the war.
2. Vietnamese are tough and can get away with a lot.

We shouldn't have fought in Vietnam. It was a mistake. I blame the MIC for getting us involved.

Rural school. Tennis, golf, swimming, bowling and cross-country skiing. Loved it.

Fond memories of gym class (we didn’t call it PE) with Mr. Hagerman. We played a variation of dodgeball called animal ball - the last 5 or so that were left standing were allowed to chase people down and cram the ball down their throats. I had good hands for a fat kid and could catch well, so I often survived to that level - but wasn’t so good at avoiding the cram shot.

Mr. Hagerman called us all “fuzz nuts” and let boys fight in the locker room if they wanted to take their aggressions out (he supplied boxing gloves). He wouldn’t last long today, I suspect.

Nope. My P.E. teacher had pictures of fat chicks. Always made jokes about how we were going to marry them when we're grown up. Like you said, he wouldn't last long today, lol.

I heard from some young folks about 10 years ago, that nobody uses the showers in the gym locker room anymore.

Our PE teacher was a former Marine. Very fit, Johnny Unitas hair-cut. Made the boys line up for inspection and to get our instructions for the activity of the day. There was one goofy fat kid, with long messy hair, clothes that didn’t fit, who received most of his ire.

It was like middle-school version of “Full Metal Jacket” for 11 year-olds

Girls were on the other side of the gym, divided by a moveable wall. Never knew what they got up to

It's been that way for a while. The Millenials stopped using the showers in the gym locker room. So that's over 30 years now.

Thank you . What is up with the constant need to revive every hardship and turn it into something traumatic. The word trauma is so over used that it’s taken away its meaning.

I was a sickly kid, and we didn’t know until 16 that it was related to an autoimmune disorder - so was my weight, as I was heavy. Renal insufficiency was making me hold water, and my blood pressure was typically in the 260’s/150’s, even with meds.

I had a few PE teachers who understood that the fault wasn’t mine, but for two of my high school years I had a teacher who dumped on me, even though I was written out of PE officially due to my health concerns. My Junior year she failed me, somehow, despite numerous doctor’s letters to the point that in Senior year, I was forced to attend PE but without participating. Nor could I do other classwork.

Woman was a cvnt. I was thrilled to leave.

However, for the brief period where I was able after dropping more than 110# of water weight, I did exercise. I was just happy that I could.

I hated PE. It wasn’t enough. In high school I played football and ran track. That wasn’t enough. I joined the USMC to see if I could hack it.

That was enough.
