In the universe of The Nation, being criticized for a comment from the right is the same thing as being denied employability from the left.
Mr. Hope did a lot for the military, but he also cheated on his wife. I remember the Anita Bryant situation (and she was right about the pedophiles) but don’t recall Hope being targeted by his enormous fan base. Weak-kneed corporations who had too many homosexuals in key positions were probably additionally influenced by his age making him less attractive as a television ratings grabber.

The Statue of Liberty/Staten Island ferry joke is a good example of how a joke could otherwise be funny, but I’d avoid simply out of respect for humanity. It might land differently from Sam Kinisson (sp?) (see, for instance, his proposed cure for anorexia). OTOH, isn’t it ironic that in this article about the right’s alleged “cancellations,” the only time Hope apparently actually felt threatened with cancellation was when he was attacked from the Left? (Even if his apology was sincere as I expect it actually was.)

You’re right...big barf alert. Hope’s biggest gig besides entertaining the troops overseas, was hosting the Academy Awards every year. It wasn’t the right that controlled those awards, and it wasn’t the right that stopped him from hosting them again.
