Probably good advice.
Before I join AA, I have to decide if I really want to quit drinking altogether.
If I decide I really do want to quit, I’ll probably just quit without a program like I did with smoking.
I have a lot of will power once I decide something - I just haven’t decided yet.
You may be just one terrible automobile or home accident away from a decision.
Addiction is a physical condition. Medically unsupervised withdrawal from alcohol can be fatal.
I’ve seen that happen a number of times in rehab.
It ain’t pretty.
It doesn’t matter what you drink or how much.
It’s what happens when you do.
God gets the glory, but I get to wear the shoes.
You can “just quit” by yourself, but then you don’t do the complete healing, the methodical mental/emotional part, with support from other group members, especially if you weaken.
But don’t take my word for it; I’m a teetotaler except for communion wine, because I watched how my relatives suffered from their spouses who were alcoholics. Infidelities, debts, lying, abandonment, car wrecks, you name it.
Unfortunately I also married a professional man with a “hollow leg”, and suffered accordingly. Al Anon (for family members of alcoholics) and ACOA (Adult Children of Alcoholics) helped me enormously to deal with the abuse by the abuser.
There are several people on the thread who have spoken about their recoveries, and they could probably give you a better quality of advice and encouragement than I can — why not freepmail them and ask their opinion privately? Most who have recovered are happy to help another. See upthread:
