“I gassed up in 3 minutes this morning.

And had my choice of 20 gas stations on the way to work.”

I know a guy that charges at home. He never wastes time stopping at gas stations.

A buddy of mine goes to his cabin all the time, 250 miles away. Charges at home, drives 150 miles to a rapid charger and stops for 15 minutes and shops. Then goes the other 100 miles to the marina and plugs his car into 110 volt. Gets on his boat to go to his cabin (on a small island) and is there for a minimum of 3 days, enough for his car to fully charge again.

He said over the last year and a half the car has cost him about 3 cents a mile to run.

I travel once a year on a trip that takes about 12 hours one way. Most of the time I stop once for gas which takes about 10 to 15 minutes.

Agreed. It works for your buddy, but wouldn't for you.

One factor for me that made a difference to getting an EV for one of our cars is when I realized how much time I spent every week at the gas station for local driving -- time that has now gone away because of charging at home. By my estimate, of the 26K miles per year my wife and I put on the EV (as of our 1-year anniversary of owning the EV last June), about 22K to 23K of those miles were charged at home. Think of those 22K local miles in the EV as 22K miles worth of local gas station stops I didn't have to do. Even if each of those local gas station stops would have been 5 to 10 minutes, they add up to more than the total minutes in 15-minute stops we make in the EV on road trips for the 4K miles charged away from home.

But that kind of throughput happens only if you drive a lot of local miles daily or weekly like my wife and I do, and can charge at home.

And when he’s not home?

Right.
