Gotta love the speculations....
Properly running modern (anything fuel injected with an oxygen sensor and a catalytic converter) vehicles produce very little carbon monoxide.
Additionally, even if the AC is turned to “recirc”, outside air is still brought into the vehicle, it’s never 100% recirc and that is by design.
Ill second fentynal.
After further thought on the matter, I didn't read the story, I saw a video on youtube that showed a senior officer trying to help a rookie who had accidentally been exposed to fentanyl and suddenly collapsed.
The senior officer gave him naloxone or narcan and saved his life.
It looked real to me.

Fentanyl made no sense to me. You don’t get high just before pulling onto base.
Probably sleeping off a little booze, and less questions arise at the gate at 0630 v 0300.
