Does seem unnecessary but I don’t understand it either unless he was worried that the supply ship would show up A supply ship probably would run rather than go up against a warship.

the “Inigma” machine was on board all U boats
When one was captured it allowed the Allies to break the Germans’ code.

I think the one at Bletchley Park may have been captured y the Poles and smuggled to Britian.
