I have not taken the Oscars seriously since “Shakespeare in Love” won over “Saving Private Ryan” back in ‘98.

“CODA was a great movie, in my opinion”

The difference between you and me is that I don’t like shows with indecent language or portrayal in them.

Yes, I meant The Darkest Hour.

And yes, Gary Oldman was amazing in it, and other than the ridiculous “tube” ride, thought it was very good.

Kurt Russell? He did a fine job. Why remake that one? It is like redoing the Jerry Lee Lewis movie with good old whatshisname Dennis, with the brother Randy who sees reality and fled to Canada? May as well remake Cat Ballou, with Susan Sarandon and a gay drunk cowboy the place of Lee Marvin.

My sister went to the Oscars and watch the fancy pants stroll in on the red carpet BITD.

Her main comment was “where do they find all this little people with oversized heads”. She saw Robert Wagner out shopping, described him as a bobble head. Said that describes them best.

When I was a kid, you paid $2 and you could go all summer. It was downtown, and we would hitch a ride, or someone would take us. We would waste many a day in the dark throwing popcorn. About 4 hours later, someones Mom would pick us up. Try that now.

In the mid 1970’s my wife told me their thing was being dropped off at Southcenter Mall near Seattle. Try THAT now.

I can honestly say I have never watched Shakespeare in Love.

Last movie I watched in theater was Dr Sleep, because my daughter and I shared a love of Stephen King novels. Before that, it was the Hobbits, Die Hard, Passion of the Christ and T2. We still have a Drive In and that is not really going to the movie. It is tailgating with a cooler.

The same, cursing is a turn off, as are homosexuals. Seriously, I don’t to see them in a movie.

“The Childrens Hour” 1960s was good. Two roomates, teachers in a fancy boarding school for girls. I think it was Shirley Mclaine, and Audrey Hepburn. The kids started a rumor they were lovers. They were not, but the entire movie they were fighting against the accusations. At the end one of them admitted they were. Well done, and the plot made sense. I can handle that. Not the phony crap they force feed us now.

YES I am that old.

I saw it on Apple TV, I think. I thought it was an excellent movie.
I got the irony of your comment 🙂👍.

It’s real life, though. It’s an accurate portrayal of the struggles of a failing fishing family, and a woman tasked to interpret for her deaf parents when she wants to move away to college and live her own life.

It’s a great movie, even though it has some vulgarity in it, as do real-life families and situations.

I’ve seen Braveheart, Gladiator, Sound of Music, and Gone With the Wind. The Green Book was also pretty good. Those are the only ones I think deserved the Oscar.

Dr Sleep

I caught that movie by accident, really. When it was on again, hubby and I watched the entire thing. I liked it; and, I am not a Stephen King fan.

I used to go to the movies a lot. But, now I find that I'm not all that interested in what Hollywood is offering. It is never a movie to "entertain"; it is always a movie to preach. Got sick of Hollywood lecturning me on how I'm supposed to live and think.

And, what is with the titles of these things. I have lost any interest in going to some films just because the title is ridiculous. You have no idea what the movie is about.

I haven’t really watched the Oscars in many years as the films and people nominated were not those I was interested in. Rarely now is big budget picture that many have seen nominated for a lot of awards.

Top Gun:Maverick was the highest grossing film of 2022, very popular. If Cruise had been nominated along with others in the cast it would have been great. Might have gotten more people interested in the Oscars. But they didn’t and Films and actors nominated were rather lackluster.

My Mother did that in the 1960’s, the movies were her babysitter. My brother and I saw everything that came out, cost us 25 cents a piece and you could stay and watch the film as many times as you wanted and we did. To this day we can quote dialogue from movies. We saw the very first James Bond movie in 1962, I was 7 my brother 5 and it was amazing.

“... even though it has some vulgarity in it, as do real-life families and situations.”

No doubt but some behaviors are best left off of the silver screen. That’s my opinion and it’s based largely on keeping kids from seeing things at too early an age.

I heard Dr. Sleep was a prequel to The Shining or something, so I was expecting something of that quality. I was terribly disappointed, and should have realized that without Stanley Kubrick we weren’t going to get anything comparable to The Shining.

The last really popular movie to get the Best Picture Oscar was what? One of the Lord of the Rings flicks (2004)? The Departed (2007)? No Country for Old Men (2008)? Maybe Slumdog Millionaire (2009)? The King’s Speech (2021) and Twelve Years a Slave (2014) were talked about, but did a lot of people see them? Everything else nobody really saw or heard of when they got the award.

But Hollywood isn’t making pictures like Dr. Zhivago or Lawrence of Arabia any more, or if they are, it’s usually a cable TV series, not a stand-alone film.

The low ratings will be blamed on “global climate change” and the war in Ukraine and Donald Trump.
Zelensky will be given an honorary Oscar. It will be modified to have standing on bundles of cash.

Sunset Blvd:
Joe: You’re Norma Desmond. You used to be in silent pictures. You used to be big.

Norma: I am big. It’s the pictures that got small.

In my teens then, if you went to the movies on a date, you sat in the front row of the tier so everyone could see you.
