What! Uncle Joe died?
Well, work nights then.
You remember Uncle Joe, he was the one afraid to cut the cake.
Not enough...
Unfortunately, there’s no choice. Property doesn’t escheat to the state in Texas so we just have to keep looking. I’d love it if I could donate it to a charitable organization, but don’t really want to lose my license and go to jail...
Some years ago my neighbor got what he thought was a suspicious letter in the mail - basically saying a very distant 3rd or 4th cousin several times removed had died and they were researching his family tree to find the closest relative.
It was true. This company also offered to take care of all of the court matters - for half of what he would get. I begged him to drive to Columbus OH and do the court thing himself and get all of the money he was entitled to, but he didn’t feel like it. He ended up getting in the $35k range - but would have been more if he wasn’t so lazy about it!
It wasn’t until some time later that I realized “I” should have offered to do the court thing for him - for half of the money! That company - if all of the other closest relatives let them - probably made more money out of this than all of them.
He had no close relatives. No children, no spouse, no nieces or nephews, I would guess from the guy’s age that 2nd, 3rd, and even 4th cousins are going to get a windfall.
That was a great episode.
IRS makes visit give it to us he didn’t file taxes right.
“He had no close relatives. No children, no spouse, no nieces or nephews, I would guess from the guy’s age that 2nd, 3rd, and even 4th cousins are going to get a windfall.”
That’s the old story about a long lost Uncle that leaves you a fortune!

I never did like open end projects.
That said, it seems the state has an obligation to locate any owners.
Years ago it was claimed computers would clear it all up... recently it is claimed the blockchain will be the answer.
Probably hieroglyphics deep in a pyramid telling of terrible times without a designated successor...
Why are so many people so dumb? One piece of paper signed before death and a charity has a windfall.
—”Why are so many people so dumb?”
Not so much dumb, more like avoiding an uncomfortable discussion about what they believe is the distant future.
Well...that pretty much is one definition of dumb. I have all my paperwork in place and I do not expect to depart any time too.
The federal exemption in 2016 was $5.45 Million.
