Use high-torque electric power from 0-15mph or so — maybe 20 — then let the ICE take it the rest of the way.

That wasn't really the point of my post. Hybrids certainly can (and do) have a role, too, but I was thinking more along the lines of electric vehicles for in town jaunts that are idle at night (e.g. delivery trucks, commuter cars) and ICE for long hauls.

I am not enamored with hybrids (even though I acknowledge the performance of some specialty ones) because I don't like the idea of wasting fuel hauling around big, heavy batteries, or electricity hauling around a big heavy ICE drive-train. For me, the added complexity is also a turn-off, though I acknowledge that the Prius (among others) do NOT have long-term reliability problems and the batteries age more gracefully than I had expected.

I just don't want that approach to become dominant, as it wipes out the sub-$2,000 used car segment that some folks need.

probably more important than batteries will be the use of graphene in desalination plants. Have you seen articles on this?

You’re better off running throttle-body injected ICE with modern engine controls that stop the engine when the vehicle comes to a stop at, say, traffic lights, or delivery stops. the tech is adaptable to any engine size, so Gross Vehicle Weight isn’t an issue.

There’s recent furor with 16 leftist States trying to sue the US Postal Service for NOT buying hybrids or all-electric vehicles to replace several thousand of their aging fleet. But the tech isn’t “there” to make a purchase of hybrids or all-electric vehicles that will see a usable fleet service life of 20-30 years.

I don’t know offhand what they did buy, but there’d be FAR less money and waste over the long haul buying trucks with little 4-cylinder power plants in ‘em, like you find in a RAV4, and installing the computer-controlled run/stop technology.

In the case of the USPS, you are correct. I don’t know about the stop-go technology, but an awful lot of resources went into customizing the next gen. The money for the design would go out the window.

I was thinking of a hypothetical use for a smaller operation. The USPS does not have power to recharge 10-200 trucks overnight.

For that matter, California’s utility grid probably couldn’t support all the local post office distribution hubs needing to recharge all of their trucks every night; the modest hubs still have a 50 or more trucks, all needing 200Amp service — that’s like having a dedicated substation. But electricity is invisible, and “out of sight, out of mind” so most people don’t see a lot full of EV’s and think about the thousands of Amps of demand if they’re all plugged in and charging.
