Several decades ago I worked in Orange County, CA.
In those days the commute took me past huge orange groves where the trees overflowed the fence line and there were hundreds of oranges lining the streets.
They were delicious.
Likewise - fried, fried, and fried some more, with lots of salt, they’re actually pretty good.
i’ve got the convenience of a steady supply of aged, tenderized, lime rock encrusted armadillos that i scrape off the dirt road in front of my place...
Yep, kind of like Fried Zucchini... :)
Stay out of my garden.
I’ll have to try that with something.
Lol, I have heard they are not bad eating...
I have a friend born 1925 who said her mother would send her and siblings into the forest and pick anything green.
The mother would pick out what was edible and put in pot with water.
Friend said it was sooooo good.
I told a neighbor who said there are still people around here in Appalachia who can do that and even teach a class
Not so much for people who live in the asphalt jungle.
Gosh, I love zucchini, grilled, fried, sautéed, roasted, raw. Mmm mmm. Fortunately, it’s fairly easy to find all year long.
My Grandpa use to go mushroom hunting but my mom would never let us eat them.
Gramps lived til his mid-80’s. I suspect he knew what he was doing!
I looked everywhere I could think of here last fall. No luck. Maybe I need to take a trip to St. Louis in October. Just a 3 hour drive.
Some years I’m lucky to find a few dozen morels on my property. Last years harvest wasn’t so great. Half a dozen. They are soooo good.
Interesting article.
Add to the list the books of Kurt Saxon from the 1980s.

Ever grow it? They produce so fast just two plants will run you out of house and home with overproduction... You will have to eat it just about every night, give a bunch away, or can the heck out of it. lol
I have grown it in the past as a teenager, and yes, that’s right. We had to give it away to friends and neighbors. As an adult I haven’t had the space requirement as an option. Ok, right now I have the space, but an HOA prevents me from planting a vegetable garden on my property. Unfortunately, the only place I could do that would be in the front yard which would easily be seen from the street. The backyard is too shaded. Container pots is about all I can manage.
Well sorry to hear that. Spring is coming too. We are fortunate and we are out in the sticks with plenty room. Rebuilding the Chicken coup now, should have donated Chickens coming next week. Putting in a Pigeon roost also. And getting the garden ready. We are back into a mode in this country where we will need some back up food. :)
You must be in a place where the ground isn’t still frozen. It will be April before I can even entertain the idea of working the ground here.
Yes, we are in the desert southwest and fortunately it hardly ever freezes and we have a long growing season. We should be in our spring here in a few weeks. Fall and winter is only about three months long. We will be hitting 100 by the middle of next month. :)
But what we do have is problems with the heat and sun combination burning up certain species mid summer, even those that like full sun. Use of tomato shade cloth is imperative here. We can’t even let the leaves get wet during the day. The droplets turn into small magnifying glasses and burn spots in the leaves.
