Amen, CatHerd. Amen.
Disowning a family member with schizophrenia is no different than throwing a retarded or crippled sibling out into the snow. No different.
At least if somebody is in a wheelchair, they get sympathy. Our mentally ill, in too many cases, get only ridicule and rejection. As if they asked God for their affliction.
News flash: They did not.
Please see 21.
My college thesis was on this subject. You are correct, it’s not a laughing matter at all. It’s really quite troubling
“Infested” is hyperbolic. It’s Florida. There are alligators.
I’m gonna guess she is gator food or got bit by some poisonous snake.
ALMOST EVERY little bit of water in Florida has an alligator or two...or more.
Having to deal with family suffering from mental illness is a harsh reality.
Fortunately, we live in a time where there is some hope and some help.
Yes, we were all horrified at her family’s cruelty. We moved her into the unused rectory next to the church where church staff and members could keep a close eye on her, and took turns hiring her so she could have some pocket money. We also took turns inviting her to dinner and taking her on outings. Of course we also took her to her appointments to make sure her meds were correctly adjusted. She did pretty well!
She was very sweet, and compliant about keeping her appointments and taking her meds. Not all mentally ill people are, and families and friends can’t force them to do so. What a nightmare for those families!
We just dumped the mentally ill out of the hospitals and onto the streets back when. They claimed they would set up group homes for them, but of course never did. Most are harmless and end up as victims of crime. Some commit one minor offense after the other and are constantly in and out of jail. It’s so sad.
Potentially. I used to live there. Most of them are no threat to an adult.
// Not to you, but for others on this thread: mocking schizophrenia is cruel and ignorant, no different than mocking those suffering with any other medical infirmity.
Anybody who makes jokes about schizophrenia has obviously never had a family member with it.
Shame on you all who think it’s a joke. //
As you say. Is not a choice, is a ROBBER, is painful for all involved.
I had the privilege of knowing a veteran with long time resistant schizophrenia, inpatient, who was tried on a newly introduced drug. It worked so well in his case that he was able to keep regular work, and obviously enjoy life. Was night and day.
Perhaps the guy with the camera could have warned her.
“Authorities have been using high-tech underwater camera systems to trawl roughly 4.5 miles of the river near where Miranda-Rosa was last seen.”
Good luck with that “authorities” because if they can’t eat it in one gulp gators tend to jam their large kills into underwater obstructions to let it “ripen” a bit.
And dang! Schizophrenia is a BEAST!
Symptoms...
Withdrawing from daily life. : Loved ones sometimes notice that someone with schizophrenia stops bathing, displays a flat affect, or stops participating in the activities they once enjoyed.
Disorganized speech and thinking: If you ask a loved one with schizophrenia any question, you may get only partial answers, or the response may be completely unrelated to the question.
Abnormal motor behavior. : People with schizophrenia often move and behave in ways that don’t make sense to those around them.
Believing that what other people are saying is not true (delusions).
Hearing, seeing, tasting, feeling, or smelling things that others do not experience (hallucinations).
Never make fun of the schizophrenic, they didn’t ask for it and they live in a HELL of a world.
I DO live here, and there are MANY alligators.
Do you tolerate man-eaters?
They did not. And Gov’t is not there to help unless certain tools are in place and that the required hoops are jumped through in a certain order. Schizophrenia may severely restrict a person from taking that rational step. It has become a daunting process.
‘NEVER let your cat out at night.’
I’m moving to coastal NC soon; if I get a cat, as I would like to do, she wouldn’t go out at all, day or night...
she wouldn’t stand a chance...
When I was a kid, we used to visit family south of Lake Wales. They had a cottage on one of the lakes that had a nice dock and a bunch of us kids used to swim there all the time. Never gave any thought to gators... adults around never warned us. It wasn’t until years later that I thought just about how much danger we were in.
If she didn't know it, I'll cut her some slack but I seriously doubt the alligators did.
Would've been nice if the hikers who took video of her warned her. English-speaking? Who knows.
OMG!!!! I would have to be in psychoanalysis for the rest of my life.
I was born and raised in Lauderdale.
Directly behind our house was a Rockpit that had
a number of gators in it.
Our whole family spent many a day swimming in that “gator infested” pit and we’re never bothered.
Dogs use to go missing but never a human .. not even small children.
