The idea of people in debt being forced to do extreme things - roman circus - almost drives me crazy. Did you ever see that one Simpsons episode about it?

The USA was born because the colonists and their descendants got sick to death of the tax situation, and having their men being conscripted to fight in foreign wars.

But enough about that.

I don’t think extremity drove any of this guy’s actions. He isn’t desperate. He’s living in a dream world. It’s fun to see.

He said he didn’t even know what was going on in his own mind when he was walking. That means the blood was somewhere else.

what was the point?

Distraction from living.

Use the 1930’s example instead. Think of all the flag pole sitting, barrels over niagara, wire walking. Very much in the news reels at the time by the media.

Just because you can, does not mean you should...

Just think of it as evolution in action.

One of my primary school teachers was ancient, could recall the turn of the century (not the last one, but the one before). She told us so much stuff about WWI and WWII - I was mean to her, but now I think about her almost every day.

She could recite bits of poems from the old days, sing songs - she was a total gas. We kids didn’t know how to appreciate her. She would get teary reciting “In Flanders Fields.” I was embarrassed but I’ll never forget it now.

She said a lot of stuff about the Niagara Falls barrel guys and the dancing-on-the-wings-of-aeroplanes.

Newsreels were a new thing when this old gal was a teen.

There’s going to be a culling. But the world is a place of wonder and delight at all times, even at this time.

How did jousting get to be a sport? (Do you ever wonder how the horses felt about it?)

I sure as hell wouldn’t do it. Even with a safety harness. But I’m glad people do. And all the naysayers should get over themselves. This is the kind of stuff that reminds people to strive, to push, to do something awesome. It’s the spirit that all our great inventions and art come from. Crapping on that is just jealousy.

Personally, I’m impressed he could commandeer all those people and resources over such a long time. And the weather still wasn’t perfect. (There’s no such thing as perfect weather!)

These days with the internet that kind of thing is easier. Just put it out on social media “need to balloons, excellent pilots”. Not like Philippe Petit’s day.

Right? But all those aeronauts would still clap and cheer. They wouldn’t be jealous.

They are wearing face masks in some photos in the baskets on the ground and none in others when in the air. That is daredevil stuff.

"What’s your point?"

Shortly after the twin towers were completed, a French tight rope walker crept up to the roof, used a bow and arrow, and strung a steel cable between the towers, and walked between them. Made a documentary about the whole thing. Very clever, quite daring.

The WTC owners triple locked all access to the roofs of both towers. On 9/11, no one could get up there for an airlift. How many people died, as an unseen cost of the innocent stunt?

For that matter, how many have even considered it?

That’s a very learned and well-informed observation.
