I had the same or similar surgery 5 years ago. In order for the colon to heal from the surgery, the small intestine must be detached from the colon & vented outside the body via a stoma on the stomach. This stoma feeds a bag, which must be emptied several times a day. The bag must be changed often. The bags can leak, & the area around the stoma burns like diaper rash.
I suffered severe dehydration for 3 months while my colon healed. I was very weak, not able to walk more than 50 feet before needing to sit down. Being dehydrated, I had foot cramps & terrible dry mouth. I went from 168 lbs. to 126 lbs. My blood pressure was very low & I had to be admitted to the hospital to receive intravenous fluids. They pumped more than 2 gallons of fluids into me until my BP was normal & my energy returned - for one day.
After 3 months of colon healing & misery, my small intestine was reattached to my colon. Though healed, because so much of my colon was removed, I now have perpetual diarrhea, which I control with Imodium.
To top it all off, my beautiful inny belly button was gone, replaced by ugly scars. So much for my Speedo modeling contract. :)
These 2 surgeries & 3 months of the bag were easily the most miserable time of my life.

We all do. You had to see the crowds in NYC when he visited. I was on Madison Avenue a block off of Fifth Avenue he was expected to be traveling across to his next destination.
Surprisingly, the Popemobile came zooming down the avenue and there was a rolling roar from onlookers you could hear coming and going.
It was one of the most impressive things I’ve ever seen in my life.
