You hear it more because of population growth. In 1950 you didn’t hear about these things because the population wad 150 million. To me it stands to reason that a population of 350 million (give or take a few million illegals) would increase crime at a rate more than 2 1/2 times 1950. Your local story theory is also very valid.

I think it's a combination of both. Of the two though, I think it's the advent of 24x7 news channels that have to be filled with something that affects people's perceptions more than anything.

It's one of the things that really pisses me off. I like building stuff with Lego, and have quite a collection of it throughout my house. However, if any of the local kids want to check it out, I require them bring along their mom, dad, or both. This is to protect me from any adverse talk. The constant drumbeat that all men are predators is extraordinarily detrimental to our society IMO.
