Is there a soundtrack for reading these letters?

When you read civil war letters they sound so much more poignant when you have a soundtrack playing melancholic instrumentals.

My beloved Charlotte,
It seems the battle will be here before the leaves lose their gold and red tones, but I hope the lazy summer days will keep you warm back home as thoughts of you comfort me here on this ridge tonight.

Martin Sheen narrated. Who was worse the Russians or the Nazis?

I vote for: Martin Sheen!

Say what you like about the Russians. But had it not been for their spirit, fighting and incredible capacity to tolerate suffering and loss, they would not have decimated the best of the German army by 1944. If America had to invade Europe with the German army largely intact, the casualties would have been huge. Many young men would have never returned, never had children and many Americans would have never come to exist.

In that case, D-Day would have been either postponed or never have taken place at all - but, on the upside, Berlin would have had the distinction of being the first site of an A-Bomb dropping.

Regards,

Highly recommend watching this, gives a lot of insight as to what went on behind the scenes, plus you get Gandalf as Hitler.

I think that I understand, Rhino - but I really believe that those letters are a vital connection to history and the humanity of those soldiers.

The swine Left would have everyone believe that all of us who fought were some kind of animals - but we know better.

I'll go one further: I think that those letters should be required reading for every school child out there, to better know what their preceding generations suffered for them and their freedom.

Kinda reminds me of CSNY. How? They did a concert at the fallen Berlin Wall. Years earlier they did one in Cuba. Stephen Stills couldn’t help but holler “Viva la revolution!” According to Billy Joel the people were tired of hearing that crap. So why did they have to capitalize in Reagan’s accomplishment?

Yeah it could prevent current soldiers from writing as honestly if they feared eventual publicity.

The higher death rate was due to the “civil war” aspect of WWII in Ukraine; they lost on both sides.

The Ukrainians and Nazis were dilettantes compared to Stalin in terms of killing; he killed 10s of millions of his own population.

I don’t know how that would work, if the Japanese were particularly submissive to a ruler believed to be divine. Curious...

I didn’t know that; why were they in the west? At the start of the war, Stalin was still concerned about Japanese intentions in the east. Also, in 1941 the USSR along with Britain invaded Iran to keep it out of the Axis camp; I’d think those troops were used for that.

Your post doesn't make any sense at all to me - what are you talking about?

What does a concert at the Berlin Wall have to do with veteran's letters?

Hitlers hope was to crush France. Then ally with Britain, Italy, Poland, and Japan to attack the Soviet union. This was Stalins greatest fear, that was a big reason why he signed the pact with Hitler. So the west would destroy themselves and he would pick up the pieces.

It’s using leftists like Martin Sheen to narrate the Smithsonian’s take on what happened during the war. Sounds like going off on a tangent. Putting Jamie Gorelik on the 911 commission.

Letters were a lifeline in WW1, WW2, Korea and Vietnam. Now it's video chat on the Internet.
In the 60's schools especially had their students write letters to the soldiers. I received some and as the years went by the memory of them went to the back of my mind.

Then one day out of the blue an email.

I’m writing to you as I clean out my moms closet. Her name was Jan (Janet) G**** and I’ve found old letters from the 2 of you. Nothing too significant, but for me to letters and mail from 1968 is pretty cool. Wanted to let you know my mom held onto them all this time and always appreciated a man or woman in service. I’m sure your communications with her strengthened her patriotism and affinity for our military. Just thought this was a cool find, and wanted to share with you.

So a 7th-8th grade young girl writes letters to an 18 year old soldier and keeps them for over 50 years. For me getting this email and the attached photos was like a time machine.

Doesn't matter the war or the time, communications far from home are like gold.
