A word about parental advantage.

Growing up, I had a friend and fellow homeschooler. Her mom was a single parent, with an IQ that was surely below 100. This woman had never lacked for social workers, child protection personnel, and other such interventionists...who did little to educate her or help her learn. I would say she didn't know who Abe Lincoln was, or that he was the same man on the penny and the $5 bill, though she knew the practical difference there. She homeschooled because she didn't want her daughter to live a similar life, and because she was always afraid a social worker would take her child from her. (She said they had tried to talk her into abortion, then adoption, and public school would have meant more do-gooders up to no good.)

Well, the daughter has a bachelor's degree now and her mom freely admits that almost all the education she ever had, she acquired while homeschooling her child.

Point is, you don't even have to be smart, just be motivated. That's the biggest advantage.

Homeschooling works only if a family can afford one or both parents to stay home and do it. Most cannot, therefore we need to fix our public and private schools.

That’s not true.

Mr mm worked with a woman who was a single mom of an adopted, formerly abused kid.

The kid was so much trouble in school, that the public school kicked him out and she was told that the next step was JD.

He was old enough to stay home alone, so she did online homeschooling with him, and the kid blossomed.

He always had trouble with academics, but was VERY gifted in the trade he trained in, and went on to make a life for himself.

And she worked full time.

Parents don’t need to be highly educated because they will also learn as they go and for the most part, manage to stay ahead of the kids, which is all you really need.

My oldest left me in the dust when she taught herself calculus out of a Saxon Math calc book.

Depends.

My wife and I tried the two parent working thing and hated it. My wife was working for USPS at the time and making more than me. Still, only $18/hour in Ctrl FL which isn’t super cheap living expenses. We met their 1st and 2nd grade teachers and the one I met talked to me in the same voice women use to talk to a young child. The one my wife talked to gave off a reek of superiority.

I quit my job and home-schooled the kids. I’m blue collar and graduated HS but no college. My kids are now as smart as any average HS graduate. College was never a consideration due to our income, same as when I grew up. They probably know English better than the avg HS graduate because they read books from the late 1800s, early 1900s.

If you have to have all nice brand new stuff all the time in your nice big home, a vehicle or vehicles less than 5-7 years old and keep up with the Jones’ then maybe it would be a sacrifice for you to lose one earner.

It did help that I’m handy and can build or fix most anything. A lot of guys don’t have that because they come from a line of office workers.

I used RobinsonCurriculum which was created by a Christian conservative PhD scientist(yes there is such a thing) who lost his wife but wanted to continue the home schooling that his wife had been doing. He needed to keep working as well but he worked from home so he created a curriculum that was heavy on self learning.

It’s very affordable because a lot of the reading is out of copyright material. I eased out of that when my daughter started using ‘I shant’ in conversation. They read the Lord of the Rings books before they were 10. Lot of Percy Jackson. That’s all my wife’s thing. I like sci-fi. Son does too.

Might have to lower your standard of living but it can be done.

Are our kids socialized? Naa, not really but I’m not social either. My wife is and it comes naturally to our daughter which she gets from mom. My son’s autistic so he’ll never be truly social. They damn get compliments for politeness though. Has it been detrimental to them? These days, probably not.

The woman who was like my wife’s second mom; and her husband, invited the kids to go stay there for a week and also invited her biological sons’ kids. Six kids in total and a few weeks later, after the kids got back, the second mom sent us a check for $400 out of the blue and while my wife was talking to her on the phone about it, she said our kids were welcome back any time but she won’t be inviting her own grandkids back. Big time Christians who go on missions every year. Just the nicest, most peaceful people you could ever meet and they went to China last time. The thought scared the crap out of me.

Sorry for rambling. Can’t get a word out of me edgewise in person. I have the web and my wife as my outlets and she’s in bed.

I saw a small congregation succeed in educating their kids. First-12th. 30 kids enrolled. One state certified teacher to make it legal. Tuition in today’s dollars about $200 or so for the year. Staffed by retirees. It can be done.

Thanks for the detail. The challenge is college-bound kids, the ones that are gifted. Homeschooling resources are limited, easier for elementary and I know some parents who did so through elementary grades but not really credible in middle and high school where you likely have request for higher math, including calculus. Refuse it and underprepare your kids. But, if you are not prepping them for college, then maybe works.

Well that's insulting as hell.

You obviously come from a family where everyone goes to college. Mine's quite the opposite and you seem to look down on that. You probably don't do a whole lot on your own. Repairs, building? Have fun with the NWO because unless you're part of the coming 'upper class', meaning a communist or working for them, you and yours are not going to fair too well. Trump talked like he did because he liked or maybe even preferred blue collar types. When he started out, he dealt with a lot of them on a daily basis and none were college graduates. Doesn't mean they weren't smart. Maybe that's why he likes them. High IQ and common sense, regardless of whether they had a degree or not.

I can build or fix most anything and have never hired anyone to do a 'lowly blue collar' job for me.

Weeks before the TP and meat shortage, we had 36 mega rolls of TP and a new small chest freezer full of meat and frozen veggies. As soon as I saw empty shelves in Italy, I went shopping. I've seen this shift to something other than a representative republic coming for a long time. The middle class is going to disappear. There will be the communist rulers and those that serve them. Some as lowly servant types and some as administrators some as military and all of the above will likely live better than the lowly people but will have lost their souls. I'll be neither.

I am only one of 18 to get through college, I want more for my kids. Homeschooling will not accomplish that.

Especially after this past year a parent would need the IQ of a bowl of oatmeal to see that the teaching establishment doesn’t care at all about their children.

If you care about your kids, homeschool them.

You may need to adjust your lifestyle a bit. Guess what, at some point they leave. It’s amazing how much money you make when the kids are gone.

The other amazing thing is that when they’re gone, they leave you satisfied that you did your best and poured your life into them so that they are prepared to be independent.

Actually that’s wrong. All they need is to go to community college and then transfer from there. Most credits earned from 2 years in a community college are transferable to a 4 year university.

Drop outs do it every day.

I dropped out before ending 9th Grade. After my commitment in the military in 76, I went to a community college first. Your not trying to claim that drop outs have a better chance via community college than home school children do are you?

Plus, most community Colleges are not as leftist leaning as the University systems are. Studies have shown that many students who transfer from a community college to a university actually do better than students coming straight from College.

Mainly, because those who dropped out of school, then went to Community college are more dedicated. I think there are multiple reasons for it.

First, community College is almost an extension of High School, with out all the drama that destroys kids chances of succeeding in High school.

Secondly, many kids mature slower and the extra time allows them to mature. The only pressure is their own desire to succeed or fail. No one is demanding they succeed anymore, because they are allured considered failures. So much of the pressure is alleviated.

Finally, after dropping out and seeing what the real World is like, they have more appreciation for what the benefits are, and is they are more dedicated. Unlike most of the children doing straight to a university from high school who are still locked into the group think of being part of a click and so the drama is carried over, which keeps them from actually succeeding.

Finally, 80% of all university graduates never ever work in the profession they gat a degree in.

Not everyone is meant to go to college. We have bought into the idea that every child should go to college, WRONG!

This mind set comes from the “60”s and “70”s liberals who realized they could indoctrinate children more if they can get them earlier and keep them longer. They were right, look at all the public and university idiots running around with brain full of crap, but cannot even make change from a dollar is the machine doesn’t tell them how to do it.

Some of the dumbest, most moronic people I have ever met, have both high school diplomas, and a 4 year degree from a reputable college. You do realize, that over 50% of all millionaire never graduated from college?

So the idea that college is the way to go, ended when the graduates from the 60s and 70s gained control of the education systems in this country.

“Homeschooling works only if a family can afford one or both parents to stay home and do it. Most cannot, therefore we need to fix our public and private schools.”

Homeschooling is possible even if both parents work.

Public schools are beyond fixing. A bit like pretending that one can somehow clean up rotting food and make it edible.

Anyone with resources still putting their children in govt schools is playing high stakes Russian roulette. Foolish or delusional. There is no mincing words when we are about to lose the Republic.

Well...I've told this story before. We HS'd both kids,,in SoCal and OK...

Never had any problems..with either state.

Had more.... well..."issues" with family.

Both kids are professionals...One passed her boards with 100% no mistakes. At the time no one had scored 100%...Might still be a record I don't know....

The other is self-employed...was on track to make $150k per yr...until the 19.

Anyway....HS'ing was right for us.

That’s the lie they want you to believe. I have a good but modest income. It was really modest when we were homeschooling.

Used cars, modest home etc. Living within your means is an awesome adventure
