Thanks. I will add another 8GB ram that matches the Samsung 8G module that the computer came with. This is an HP from 2 years ago. Great fast CPU— i5-8400. It come with an Intel Optane chip which speeds up the 7200RPM hard drive.

So that READ is 929 mb/s
WRITE is 159 mb/s
Computer boots in 16 seconds but I am same as you. I put it to sleep and reboot maybe once per week.

So no SSD which would read and write at about 400-500 mb/s
Someday ahead I will swap out the Optane chip for an NVME drive and use that NVME as my primary hard drive.

I did put a fresh WD 500GB NVME drive into a cheap i3 Dell laptop. Speeds now are>>
WRITE— 1800 Mb/s
READ —2400Mb/s

That is best as the Lord leads.

Very slow writes, and are you sure the read is that high? Even a Samsung 860 EVO maximum read/write speed is cited as 550 MB/s and 520 MB/s. And see https://photographylife.com/nvme-vs-ssd-vs-hdd-performance and https://www.enterprisestorageforum.com/storage-hardware/ssd-vs-hdd-speed.html

I did put a fresh WD 500GB NVME drive into a cheap i3 Dell laptop. Speeds now are>> WRITE— 1800 Mb/s READ —2400Mb/s

Sound good. I was able to get a Silicon Power 512GB NVMe for under 60.00 a while back and a quick CrystalDiskMark 7 sequential 1MiB Read is 3456.993 MB/s and 850.57 Write. On SSD I have tests as 564.26 Read and 489.91 Write.

Thank God for what tools we have; may they be use to help us serve Him.

Optane was nice try by Intel but NVME drives have surpassed it. Anyway here are two examples of my reads/writes for a 7200RPM drive in my HP desktop computer with Optane assist. Optane is legit because reads are more important than writes. With Optane the WRITES are about the same as without any optane chip. You can see that Optane makes a 7200RPM hard drive READS much much better.

Yes, those are impressive reads for a HDD but there sure is a disparity with the writes. And it is expensive when you get the size you need. https://www.anandtech.com/show/12748/the-intel-optane-memory-m10-64gb-review-optane-caching-refreshed/8 https://www.pcgamer.com/intel-optane-memory-everything-you-need-to-know/

16GB Optane is what I have that works in conjunction with a 1TB 7200RPM hard drive. These 16gb Optane chips go for $13 on eBay. Intel had a great idea but NVME drives are down in price so you get an NVME for your boot drive. Or buy a computer or a laptop that has an NVME boot drive and conventional hard drive for storage.

NVME is where it is at. I’ll bet HP is not even making Optane computers any more. Dell and Lenovo did.

From what I read 16GB Optane gets used up so fast that they were not even recommended at all, but yes, 512GB NVME for about $50 makes that the better buy if speed is the issue. And considering that a 1TB SSD ($90) is not much more than a HDD and is supposed to last much longer now, then I think that should be the storage drive.

Dude, get an SSD. Seriously -it’s not the ‘90s (although it feels like it sometimes -like the stock market currently)

Thanks for your sparring back and forth. I have a few computers—Desktops and laptops all run Windows 10. They range from regular 2.5”SSD -— to NVME drive -— to Optane assisted 7200RPM drive.

Others say this and I agree — That in the real world, for most purposes, you will not see much if any difference in speed and boot times between 2.5” SSDs and NVME drives.

BUT-One advantage of a nice fast NVME drive is that for those who play games (I do not) you can load these large (in megabytes) games quicker. Also if you regularly transfer large files.

In my book a good configuration is a 250-256-500-512GB NVME boot drive along with a conventional 1-terrabyte spinning hard drive for storage. Laptop drives are just about all 5400RPM while for a desktop you get a 7200RPM spinner.

I see West Digital Blue 500gb NVME for 54$ at Amazon. I have one of these installed in a laptop with no problem. Here is the least expensive 250GB NVME / 33$ >>>> https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B08971ZJQQ/ref=ox_sc_saved_title_1?smid=A2UXO5LPTDY3LN&psc=1 <<<<>>>>

ADATA Swordfish 250GB 3D NAND PCIe Gen3x4 NVMe M.2 2280 Read/Write up to 1800/1200MB/s Internal SSD (ASWORDFISH-250G-C)

Not the fastest NVME but I just might buy one.

I did buy another 8GB Mem for my Optane desktop so soon I will have 16GB for my main computer, a desktop. Which really is for internet research and surfing around. Streaming you tube or a movie. Office stuff.

Nice arrangement you put together! I assembled my own desktops from 2000-2014. My 2014 desktop had 16gb mem and a Pentium Haswell CPU with Passmark rating of 3000. 512 GB Silicon Power SSD also. But it pooped out before Christmas. Actually I damaged it via some stupidity.

I was going to build another Comp but CPU prices were too high. So I caved and bought an HP with 8Gb mem/Optane/1TB hard drive. It has a very strong i5-8400 which is almost 10,000 on Passmark. Got on sale from VIP Outlet for about 230$. Its a refurb or a Walmart overstock. But sold as refurb. Minimal extra PCI slots but I like that it is small and light.

So all I really need is an extra 8GB mem which is arriving tomorrow. Cost me 32$ from Amazon. Was the cheapest they had that had good ratings. Of course I bought RAM that matched what the HP came with. Yeah. I know this is not a legit pair and will not work for dual channel. Can't have everything. So total cost was $265 or so. I partitioned the 1TB 7200RPM hard drive. Thus I have a separate Windows OS partition that I can wipe and do a fresh Windows install every two years. Wipe after saving important files onto the large storage partition.

Another good refurb from VIP. Just add 8GB Mem. This one was also on sale last Chritmas. Has Optane to goose the hard drive at least on reads.
