Estate Planning, No Definite Choice of Heirs: Who Would You Designate?
Self | 10/17/20 | Self

An old acquaintance, in her eighties and totally lucid, asked me who to leave her estate to. She has no living descendants, nobody she knows (or prefers, anyway) that she wants to make an heir. She asked for suggestions.

I don't want the honor. She has a fairly nice house, and a small vacation cottage, both paid for. An old car, probably some life insurance, and a lot of mementos.

Any suggestions? Aside from "me, me!" I mean something like a charity, or some creative idea.

I couldn't think of a thing, and I promised her I'd come up with something.

If you didn't have anyone close, to leave your estate to, who or what would you leave it to?

I would contact favorite charity. YMMV but for us for instance if not for family it would be the church and the Christian college DD went to or other Christian ministries.

You could leave it to Hunter Biden, but keep in mind he has to kick 50% of it to the Big Guy.

Good heavens. My advice is to not seek this kind of advice on an internet message forum.

Look into a local food bank or soup kitchen, or perhaps a conservative charity that supports the community. “Me” is not a good answer - “then” works better, as long as them is someone or something that deserves support.

I would like for her to leave it to the Arizona Citizens Defense League (AZCDL).

That is my preference.

Find out what she values, what she wants to preserve, and enhance. The local library? Her alma mater (hope not). A local park?

Samaritan’s Purse.....

St. Judes Childrens Hospital

Shriners
Tunnels to Towers
Wounded Warrior Project

You could start a trust fund for needy families that make sure THEY get the funds or needs furnished to them. I wish I could trust the old charities like Goodwill and Salvation Army......after I heard that the Salvation Army moved their convention from one of President Trumps resorts I gave up on them.

I had a similar situation. The lady has living relatives. Prior pleading about Christ may have been unproductive but designating unbelieving relatives as heirs can have a shock effect.

Ask her what has brought her joy (legally ;-) and then work through what she can do to ensure that others enjoy that in the future. The answer will fall out of that.

There are usually organizations that provide transitional housing for people that need a break. Not a free ride forever, but a leg up. Find a reputable one somewhere that doesn’t just give handouts to addicts and systemic abusers but which helps people that had a bad break through no fault of their own (house burned down, landlord lost house and they got evicted by new owner, job lost due to shut downs, etc.) Good people sometimes get the short end.

My choice, if I had an estate to give away, but nobody to give it to, would be to have everything sold that can be sold and the money invested and the proceeds given to a worthy cause.

However, if she really needs an heir, I am willing to step forward and be the sacrificial lamb.
