THE PRINCE IN THE METROPOLIS; THE PRINCE IN PHILADELPHIA; THE OCTOBER ELECTIONS; The Prince of Wales in New-York (10/11/1860)
New York Times - Times Machine ^ | 10/11/1860

To-day let us hope that the pluvious Jupiter who has thus far attended and beset the wandering son of Victoria, will return to rainy Britain to report progress, and leave his royal charge to the sunshine and the smiles of the great American City. Never were our people in a better humor of hospitality than to-day. Some few worthy people, of course, are excited to an inordinate degree of unreflecting enthusiasm by the consideration that they are actually on the point of looking on the face of a live Prince, who, if he lives, will one day be a living King. This is as natural and as cosmopolitan a disease as the measles or the croup, and like them rarely attacks those who are adults in intelligence. But the masses of our population, of all orders, are actuated by a loftier as well as a mere generous feeling. In them a reasonable curiosity to see the Prince as a "distinguished stranger," is warmed and kindled by a hearty good-will towards the nation which he represents, and the royal lady who claims his service and his reverence by a higher than a queenly title. In all directions this mood of the multitude is harmoniously displayed. It appears in the ready response of our military to the summons which make them the ushers of our guest, and in the preparations everywhere visible for thronging the whole line of the Prince's parade to-day, and the whole line of his sojourn among us with the "unbought homage" of a free, prosperous and powerful people. If the event shall but answer to the exordium, the Prince of Wales's visit to New-York may take its place among the most agreeable as well as the most important historical fasti of the current age.

Thanks - interesting post.

Somehow, I had never thought about the fact that Lincoln was President, and Victoria was Queen, at the same moment in history.

Also quite remarkable that 84 years after the British Army had forcefully occupied New York City, and just 46 years after the same Army burned down the White House, crowds of cheering Americans greeted the Prince of Wales!

Nothing like British royalty and a good party to distract people from contemplating the disintegration of the Union.
