Sherwood Schwartz, the brilliant creator and producer of the show, wrote that he received volumes of mail from people who “knew” the location of the island and how the castaways could be rescued. A definite percentage of the population, no doubt voters, in the 1960s beleived the show was real. There is little doubt that given the popularity of vampire shows, chain saw massacre and comic book films, that percentage has increased greatly and they vote. Trump cannot depend on logic alone to ensure his reelection.

I remember reading Ed O’Neill (Al Bundy on Married With Children) say that shortly after the show ended he got a serious role in a stage play. But when he walked on stage the first time, the whole audience cracked up laughing. “Al” was too big to overcome - I suspect Russell Johnson and the rest of the Gilligan’s Island crew had the same problem later in their careers.

Russell Johnson (The Professor), a real American hero. Flew 44 combat missions in WW2.

From wikipedia:

After graduating from high school, Johnson enlisted in the United States Army Air Forces as an aviation cadet. On completing his training, he was commissioned a second lieutenant. He flew 44 combat missions in the Pacific Theater during World War II as a bombardier in B-25 twin-engined medium bombers.[4]

On March 4, 1945, while flying as a navigator in a B-25 with the 100th Bombardment Squadron, 42nd Bombardment Group, 13th Air Force, his B-25 and two others were shot down during a low-level bombing and strafing run against Japanese military targets in the Philippine Islands. The B-25s encountered heavy anti-aircraft fire, and all three had to ditch in the sea off Zamboanga. Johnson broke both ankles in the landing, and his bomber’s co-pilot was killed. Johnson received a Purple Heart for his injuries. He was also awarded the Air Medal, the Asiatic-Pacific Campaign Medal with three campaign stars, the Philippine Liberation Ribbon with one campaign star, and the World War II Victory Medal.

Johnson was honorably discharged as a first lieutenant on November 22, 1945, then joined the United States Air Force Reserve.[5]

Ginger Grant did a deodorant commercial after the show ended, IIRC.

There is some YouTube video out there by some guy who dissects old TV show flubs and gaffs.

In one Gilligan’s Island episode, a city water tower can be seen in the far distance.

Back then, no high definition TV and the like to see all the flaws.

He could do so much with coconuts, palm leaves, and vines.

I'm going with Cargo Cult Science!

But he couldn’t figure out how to cut down a few coconut palms and lash them together with palm leaves and make a raft?

Same thing happen when a group of us went to see Cliffhangers. Ralph Waite was about to die and someone yelled out Goodnight Daddy.

Impressive guy.

Today, most guys graduating from high school aren’t like that.

He was a Professor of Psycho Ceramics, just like J. S. Carberry:

That’s interesting. It’s good to know he was a patriot.

Is there a law against both?

He was a eunuch. With Ginger and Mary Ann runnin around all dolled up he must’ve been. Gilligan was too stupid, Skipper too fat and Mr Howell too old and he was stuck with Mrs Howell.

The math:

The millionaire had his actress girlfriend along for the trip along with his wife. (Prototypical rich deep staters).

The song makes it clear that it is the professor AND Mary Ann together.

And the captain had Gilligan.

one of the main characters

I'm imagining the pitch for this show. "It's about seven castaways shipwrecked on an uncharted tropical island."

Won't that get boring with the same seven people every week?"

"Nah, we'll have guest stars."

Tina Louise was very bitter for years about how “Gilligan’s Island” ruined her ability to get serious roles.

(Then again, Charles Bronson felt the same way in later years about his “Death Wish” series.)

There should be a law that mandates both!
