Pretty much, except for a yard full of limbs. Now we'll have to contend with what's now Tropical Storm Beta at the end of next week. Think I might start fermenting a mini-keg of beer this evening. Of, if I get on a roll, start both.

Hi, guys! We had the same thing—a yard full of sticks and leaves. Still haven’t cleaned it up, because it started raining from that low pressure system in the Gulf, and it hasn’t stopped yet.

Hi Gina, glad you’re ok. Things are good. The poor grass seed a few days into germination was hit by overnight lows into the 40’s so that’s annoying. Went to a few dinners this weekend. Life’s good!

Well, crap. Shorted myself one can of cherries and a squeeze hug of honey. Well, gotta make a hard cider run anyway, and the store is still open, so looks like I’ll kill two birds with one stone..........just making sure I didn’t forget anything, so I’ll push back the fermentation end of it 24 hours. I need an adult beverage. Now, not at Christmas. LOL

Well, double crap. Bad new is, they were out of cherries. Good news is, I got the honey. Bonus news is, I looked at the recipe and the Cherry Tart only requires the pureed lime zest, juice, and cherries in a muslin bag at Day 7. LOL *whew* Still have to get another can, but now I have wiggle room. It's the Grapefruit Crush that requires the honey up front. Never brewed with sorghum wort or Citra and Cascade hops before. I'll defer until tomorrow at this point. Both recipes look delish. Only batch I ever had to go bad on me was the Oktoberfestivus dark beer, and it had a bad batch of yeast. Otherwise spent the day cleaning and winterizing. About ready to start filling both aquariums with water, and hook up the wet/dry filters to the 110 gallon. Connie got the bright idea of planting two of the Ranier cherry pits from a bag of cherries I got her, and lo and behold, she has two 1" seedlings from them now. Probably winter them over on the same plant table as the citrus trees (the Key lime tree needs constant pruning because it's growing like a weed, same as the lemon tree, and it has a cluster of tiny buds, as well), then start reading like a madman on the pros, cons, and care of Raniers. I'm not even sure what growth zone they're supposed to be in.

Things are busy as usual. How does your beer turn out as compared to commercial products?

Better, if you pay attention to the little things. It's a harder process to do it in small batches. Personally, I use pure spring water for my brewing process. I keep my fermenting kegs and stainless steel brewing equipment in an operating-room sterile state before I start. Even minute traces of particulants can alter the taste. Larger breweries can allow computers to monitor the entire process from mixing the wort to the bottled product. The only real human intervention is tasing the product at various stages to confirm what the gauges and monitoring sensors are telling you. Hand crafted beer is a whole other animal. But the end result can be miles from commercially brewed beer. It has flavor, bite, you can tell the type of hops and yeast in it, adjuncts like fruit or a different kind of priming sugar. Look around Mr. Beer and see for yourself. It's a fascinating hobby to have, and once you accrue all the necessary equipment, it's relatively cheap to brew by the case. Not by commercial standards, of course. If you want a $12.99 case of rot gut, better to go buy it. But this is yours. You brewed it. Keep your brewing down to under 100 gallons a year (200 per household), and you're golden. I'm not looking to sell it and get wrapped up in that whole federal licensing mess. This is for personal consumption, and it's not something you'll find in your local booze emporium's beer cave.
