P-Wave precedes the S-Wave. An initial jolt of ground pressure similar to a shockwave, which the animals usually respond to is very brief. The shear motion crosswise to the direction of travel is longer duration and causes majority of damaging shaking.
Seismologist have determined that in the event of a Cascadia Fault rupture, there is a likely high chance the San Andreas will participate also. This is based on comparative analysis of synchronized events of the two fault systems for about the last three thousand years. Reverse order of San Andreas leading to Cascadia less clear.

Here is some more, and may I say very interesting information about how satellites are being used to monitor, further understand the dynamics of, and possibly provide some measure of warning about seismic activity. This includes earthquakes, tsunamis, volcanoes and as a personal note, likely has military applications—those of which can greatly aid in a myriad of situations.
