Maryland’s state song, “Maryland, My Maryland,” a controversial ballad with lyrics that celebrate the Confederacy and that many consider to be racist, will not be played in Baltimore next month when the second leg of the Triple Crown runs at Pimlico Race Course.

Another tradition blown up by the Left.
First the professional sports, then NASCAR, followed by collegiate sports, a few high schools, and now horse racing. True patriots are going to save alot of money $$$$ as well as spend quality time elsewhere by not tuning in to this madness this year. . . .and perhaps forever.
I’m sick and tired of these people telling us that everything, everyone does, says, or have is racist. It’s time to stop this insanity.
Since it’s so close* to Christmas, they should play “O Tannenbaum”.

They could also borrow our unofficial state song, “Michigan, My Michigan”.

So soon after “the war”? It’s only been 155 years, so heartless of them.
You could ask 10,000 people what the words were to Maryland, My Maryland and I doubt 10 could tell you. There is no good reason to shove this song under the the bus. Our National Anthem will soon face the same threat.

They should quit playing songs like this or My Old Kentucky Home or the National Anthem. The leftists running sports should just pull away the curtains and play L’internationale to begin every game and as their universal fight song.
Horse racing is all about traditions for me. I've attended more than 50 Belmont Stakes and more than 50 Travers Stakes. I've been to more than 30 US racetracks including Pimlico for a Preakness. I've seen every other Preakness as it was run on TV since I was a child with one exception. I've bet on every Preakness card whenever I've legally been allowed to do so.
So it is with a heavy heart that I have decided not to watch, or bet, or even read about any races at Pimlico any more.
They can shove their stupid Political Correctness where the sun don't shine.

You are correct about the band but I believe it was first done when Lee’s army crossed into Maryland in the 1862
campaign that resulted in the Battle of Antietam.

When we moved to Maryland, we read these lyrics in the state song and laughed.
