Did you notice that the bi-metal bullets wore the barrel throats out quicker?
Interesting but it might be more of a test of the ammo makers than steel cased ammo.
Ak all the way, that’s not even debatable.
AR’s are terrible in the hands of novices.
People who talk precision, never mention the FTF, FTE, jams, and debris wreaking havoc on AR’s. That rarely happens to AK’s.
There is an old video with a military arms expert from the early 2000’s, I forget that guys name - he was with the National Archives or some other alphabet agency. The quote I remember most from him is that it would take him only 30 minutes to go over every aspect of an AK with somebody who’s never fired one. He stated for an AR, it would take him over a week to do the same explanation.
Maybe that answers your question?
I ran a lot of Wolf steel through my AR during one of the ammo shortages. I did OK with it for a couple thousand rounds and then had an awful jam, almost had to resort taking it to a gunsmith $$.
I promptly got on armslist and sold all of what I had.
Regarding the AK, I had very good experience with the Golden Tiger brand. Not that I had any problems with the other steel stuff, but it seemed just a little better.
Very interesting. I cant remember if it was issues with rifle or pistol rounds, but I swore off Tula ammo many years ago.
Me and my Army Son just lost our .45’s and his AR-15 in a similar boating accident. They went down to the bottom of the lake...

That may have the side effect of accelerated extractor wear. Ive seen massively accelerated extractor wear happen as a result of steel cases ammo usage to begin with.
Weapons intended to be used with steel case dont seem to have that problem.
Neither the AK or AR is a battle rifle.

My Rock River Arms AR hates Tula. Over several trips to the range I determined the average rounds to an FTE at 63 with it. I’m now lightly mixing it in with brass case ammo in an effort to get rid of it. I’ll never buy it again.
A shot an AK that belonged to a friend of mine in TX. Talk about accurate; holy crap. I was surprised.
I was disappointed that he sold it to his sister, because I’d have given him more for it.
I’ve found extractor springs available, but no extractors.
Lots of AR parts are out of stock right now.
I had problems with an AR-15 and an AR-10 in 6.5 Creedmore The AR-10 was the Savage long barrel long range model.
And from them, I learned how important it is to have the gas check adjusted correctly.
The AR-10 would jam on every shot, new out of the box.
By the way all ammo was Hornaday. Adjusting the gas port cured the problem, which was short stroking.
The AR-15 was a Ruger 5.56 running Hornaday .223 SuperPerformance Varmit and it would also jam.
As that rifle had no adjustable gas port, I changed to plain old Varmit Express and that gave the bolt time to complete its cycle and it never jammed again.
Interesting in that I also had at that time a Savage AR-10 Hunter in 6.5 Creedmore and it shot flawlessly out of the box with no adjustment required. Same ammo.
The shorter barrel? Or adjusted properly at the factory?
So depending on whether the rifle has an adjustable gas port or not, there are ways to make them reliable.
If I were going to use an AR-15 for defense, I would go for brass.
It is interesting to me that Lucky Gunner did not have a stuck firing pin put any of the rifles in automatic. A dirty failed to retract firing pin can cause some excitement.
All in all, a very interesting article.
Great stuff.
Brass always and forever.
bookmark.
So reading all the data, rationally, it is cheaper to use the steel cased ammo, just have to allocate slightly more to maintenance and replacement parts. Also found it kind of interesting that out of the box two rifles needed such adjustments, someone’s skipping steps at the factory.
Yup, though honestly the more common way to get one right now is as part of a BCG.
That said... hand me a FAL over an AR any day. :P
