Hollywood's Male #MeToo Stigma and the Fear of Coming Forward: "It's Looked Upon as a Weakness"
The Hollywood Reporter ^ | June 26, 2020 | Rebecca Keegan

Last fall, Johnathon Schaech was running out of options. After making a living as an actor for 30 years — 1996's That Thing You Do! was his breakout — he was in danger of losing his SAG health insurance from lack of work, and he and his wife were trying to have a baby. Schaech, 50, had become something of an unwitting spokesman for male #MeToo victims in 2018 after he said Italian director Franco Zeffirelli had sexually assaulted him on the set of the movie Sparrow in 1993. (Before Zeffirelli died in June 2019, his son, Pippo, denied the allegations in People magazine.) In the aftermath of that disclosure, Schaech found his acting opportunities drying up, and he parted with his agency, APA, and manager, Risa Shapiro. "I've never been so vulnerable in my life," Schaech says. "Like, whoa, wait a minute. What did I just do?" Schaech was unsure if his newfound vulnerability was hurting his confidence as an actor or if he was being blacklisted for speaking out. "People were taking one side of the #MeToo movement or the other, like a friend of theirs was called out or a friend of theirs was affected," he says. "They didn't necessarily hear my story. They heard their story." Schaech began reaching out to friends for help and secured a meeting with showrunner Greg Berlanti, for whom he had worked on The CW show Legends of Tomorrow. They spoke about parallels between the way gay people in Hollywood had historically been shunned after they came out and the way Schaech worried the industry might be treating him now. Berlanti re-hired Schaech, allowing the actor to retain his health insurance.

Gay Harassment/Assault is rampant in Hollywood. Look up any male child actor in the years 1960-2000. Most of them have turned out to become gay. That is the Gay Mafia in Hollywood, using the young boys and then letting them fend for themselves after the ‘director’ or some other Gay bigwig is done with the child. Read Corey Haim’s story. It will break your heart. NEVER would I have let my son go the Hollywood route. We did know several youths, male and female, who were constantly trying to ‘break into Show Business’, when we lived in LA. What a mess of debauchery it is.

A lot of rumors is that it happened to John Travolta when he started out, and that’s why he “turned”.

That thing you do, the movie mentioned in the article, was a lot of fun and very clean.

Wouldn’t surprise me. During the Halloween season, one of our fave movies is Hocus Pocus. I looked up the young man, cannot recall his name right now, that starred in it as he seemed like a good actor but didn’t seem to be in anything anymore. I think I read that he is a single hairdresser now. Look up most of the actors from the 90’s and before. I suspect they will be doing the same. And Corey Feldman’s book was a real eye-opener. I have only read excerpts, I don’t think I could stomach the whole book.

Yes, a Tom Hanks movie. I read that he originally wrote the drummer’s part for himself but realized he was too old for that part. Very fun movie! And very relatable to life in the 60’s.

I have read of several such accounts of Franco Zeffirelli over the years. I remember an interview with author Anthony Burgess, who wrote the screenplay for the Zeffirelli-directed miniseries Jesus of Nazareth. Zeffirelli wanted Burgess to write a scene implying a homosexual relationship between Jesus and John ("the disciple Jesus loved"). Burgess said he told Zeffirelli that if he wanted to do some creative editing of the two looking longingly at each other that was up to him; but there was no way any such scene would be appearing in this script.

Also, the movie Withnail and I, written by Bruce Robinson, has a character based on Zeffirelli. The writer/director Bruce Robinson played Benvolio in Zeffirelli's famous Romeo & Juliet from 1968. He said Zeffirelli was constantly hitting on him during filming. The character of Uncle Monty in Withnail and I, who is constantly making sexual advances on the two young male protagonists is based on Robinson having to fight off Zeffirelli during Romeo and Juliet.

Sorry but if you waited 25 years to do a kiss and tell? For what purpose? If you dont report it then and there, 0 sympathy. You are now an enabler.

When the alleged assault took place in 1993, Zeffirelli was age 70, and the Me-Too guy was 23.

That is impossible to believe, unless the Me-Too guy was surreptitiously drugged.

drummer’s part for himself?!?!

FAR too old for that part. It was a teen band.

Yeah I love the song :)

I enjoy watching guys play in the 50s and older if they can still rock.

But these were kids and he must have at least been in his 30s by then

Does everyone know that the crosshatch is also known as the “pound” sign?

So #MeToo reads as “pound me too.” What a great slogan to use in a campaign against sexual harassment.
