The Houston Association of REALTORS® says it will stop permitting the term “master bedroom” or “master bathroom” to be used in MLS descriptions. The decision to remove the term comes after a group of real estate professionals said the term “master” on property description represents a potential stigma.
HAR has updated the phrase to “primary bedroom” and “primary bath” on its MLS and on har.com.
The national standards organization for MLSs is reportedly considering a similar change that would make “primary” the new standard nationwide.
“‘Master’ represents a stigma and place in time that we need to move forward from,” Tiffany Curry, a Houston real estate broker and owner of Berkshire Hathaway HomeServices, told the Houston Chronicle. “As a progressive, diverse city, Houston should be reflective of its citizenship.”
Some home builders are dropping the term, too. David Weekley Homes now refers to the space as the “owner’s retreat” instead.
They don’t even understand what the word means.

Is the “Dominatrix Bedroom” a reasonable replacement?
What about houses with servants quarters (although they have now been renamed the mother-in-law suite).

That went along with removing Family Room also in case folks who don’t have a family ....

That change has been underway for quite a few years already.
It’s just becoming more of a formal policy.
As much as five, six years ago, I would see real estate shows on tv with agents bringing this up. For certain prospective buyers, the agent would not start off saying ‘Master’ anything unless the prospective buyer used the term first.
They forgot to mention that in the future, the word “axe” will be dropped as well. An axe must now be called a hatchet.
So what did they decide? Slave quarters sounds more sexy?

What if you have a “Master’s” degree? Or use a “Master” lock on your school locker? What is the superintendent going to call the “master” key. The 1987 movie “Masters of the Universe” must go. In school you can no longer “master” the material. Courts will no longer be able to appoint “special masters”.
