'Churchill didn't beat the Nazis. Vera sang them to death': How 'Forces' Sweetheart' Dame Vera Lynn roused Britons to stand in Solidarity against Hitler and during Covid crisis

Dame Vera Lynn was the 'forces' sweetheart' during the Second World War, performing for troops as they fought enemy forces around the globe with inspirational songs that gave them hope on their darkest days that they would see home again.

Her extraordinary career stretched 96 years, beginning when she was seven and continuing until just six weeks ago when she sang 'We'll Meet Again' with Katherine Jenkins to mark the 75th anniversary of VE Day.

In her final interview before she died, she described her bond with the Allied troops who gave or risked their lives for their country - with her own war effort making her name as enduring as that of Sir Winston Churchill.

Vera Lynn was a wonderful and remarkable woman. Part of the Greatest Generation. And I don’t think we’ll see anyone like her again. Because should any lady try to sing a patriotic song these days...well, you know the rest.

You remind me of the scene in the movie “Patton” when General Patton had the American marching band drown out the British bagpipers.

Old Winnie just lazed around, drinking bourbon, smoking cigars and writing books yaknow..

All those pics of him with folks walking amidst the London rubble was staged too, I bet.

If only Chamberlain had been in charge a little longer,, we wouldn’t have had to witness his shameless acts or what Britain would turn into..

Loved the end of Dr. Strangelove and Vera warbling away.

and Yes, We will meet again. Don;t know where Don;t know when..

I have an iPod playlist I call The Good War. It has around 30 songs from the 40s. About month after my beloved passed I was on the porch and turned the iPod to The Good War. The iPod was on shuffle. The first song that came up was Jo Stafford, I’ll Be Seing You. Nice coincidence I thought. Song after song played until the last song came up. Vera Lynn, We’ll Meet Again. I realized it was not a coincidence.

“And I don’t think we’ll see anyone like her again. Because should any lady try to sing a patriotic song these days...well, you know the rest.”

Her type are definitely out of stock.
She not only sang the songs the people loved, she traveled to Egypt, India and Burma entertaining the troops.
I can’t see any of todays “stars” doing the same.

Vera performed just this year at the 75th VE Day anniversary celebration.
In 2017, when she was 100 years old, she released the album Vera Lynn 100 which rose to #3 on the English music charts. Vera was the first centenarian to crack the top 10.

Quite the lady that Vera.
