I hope Wal*Mart has the common sense and common decency to post a large sign, easily seen from the parking lot, that this store is self-checkout only.

I’d be really bummed if I spent time finding a parking place, walked to the store and got a shopping cart only to discover the store had no cash register checkout lanes.

I prefer the normal check out with bagging by the
the clerk and me placing the bags in the cart. JMO
= = = = = = = = =
Harris-Teeter goes one better....

pull your cart BEHIND the cashier, he/she/it unloads it so they can bag it the way they want..
In my local H/Ts, no option on that and not sure if they have self check or not...
I do know they hire ‘school age kids’ for weekends, which I guess works well as gives the kid a chance to ‘learn’ a job, lets regulars off weekends AND cuts down on potential OT....

Can you check out alcohol (beer/wine/spirits) in the self checkout?

Was talking to the wife just an hour ago.

Did this China virus shut down self checkout or encourage it?

We haven’t been in that type of store in 4 months.

This thread is the answer I guess.

It's much more complicated than that. You have to press some button to get things started, scan the items, place them in the right place so they can be tracked by weight, scan your loyalty card for discounts, and properly finish the transaction by paying.

Normally I see half the stations in some wonky state because the previous shopper failed one of these steps and gave up.

People need jobs. Even low wage jobs.

No. People can do more with their lives than pick up an item and scan it. I think humanity is meant for better things.

You suffer from socialist influence. Fire the backhoe operator and hire 10 men to dig the ditch thinking.

Better yet, cut the shovels in half and hire 20 men to dig the ditch!

Elimination of wasteful work is true progress.

Not in these parts. Don’t know if that’s true everywhere though.

Most non-membership stores are simple.

You own title to the merchandise you buy as soon as you pay cash or swipe the c/c. Those stores have no legal right to stop you on your way out the door and check your receipt, etc.

This is why I WONT JOIN any membership club. You agree away your rights and allow them to treat you as a thief. at the door.

Simple.

The area with the bags can sense the change in weight. If you skip the scanner you can’t put it in the bag without an alarm sounding. And you can’t walk by the person the exit with goods not in bags.

I like the self checkouts for the most part.

Humans are programmed to attempt to sign you up for the store’s “rewards” program, which I want no part of. Sometimes they can be really obnoxious about it.

And the machines never get into a lengthy conversation with the person in line in front of you.

In Californicator land, we can’t use the fast self check lines if we have alcohol

Even as old goats using their place order via your computer and picking up our order outside, we still have show our ID.

I joke with the people asking me for my ID, I say, “Is my order free if I am 3 times as old as your are?”

My idea, a long time ago, was to have the scanner on the cart. When you put an item in the cart it knows it, if you take it out it knows that too. Put your card in the reader built onto the cart, walk out of store. I can’t believe nobody has developed that yet. You only have to handle items once, not load, unload onto conveyor, load back into cart.

Can you check out alcohol (beer/wine/spirits) in the self checkout?

Not an issue in Alaska. You can't buy any type of alcohol in a grocery store. Never tried it down in Arizona where my winter house is. I think I've bought alcohol twice while down there, both times at a regular checkout stand, as that store doesn't have self checkout.
