Breaking News: Republican senators def Donald Trump by voting to strip Confederate generals' names from Army bases — despite White House threatening a veto

Republican senators rebelled against Donald Trump late Wednesday by voting to tell the Army to rename bases named after Confederate generals within the next three years.

The Armed Services Committee, whose members include Trump ultra-loyalist Tom Cotton, voted behind closed doors for the move, Roll Call first reported.

The voice vote was on an amendment to the annual Pentagon policy bill — the Defense Authorization Act — which was put forward by Sen. Elizabeth Warren, the Massachusetts Democrat and former presidential candidate.

It came hours after Donald Trump tweeted furiously that he will “not even consider” renaming Forts Bragg, Hood, Lee and others.

The move puts the Republican senators on a collision course with Trump, who White House press secretary Kayleigh McEnany suggested would veto any legislation which renamed the bases. …

Fort Lee is named for a Revolutionary War General.

“Republican senators rebelled against Donald Trump late Wednesday by voting to tell the Army to rename bases named after Confederate generals within the next three years.”

Don’t know if this is true. It sounds like it could be.

Trump often stands alone. Many elected Republicans are weak.

Trump said hell no and he means it.

After watching General Milley apologize and grovel about appearing at Lafayette Park, if I were Trump I'd fire him...TODAY.

So rename Fort Hood as Fort Bragg, rename Fort Bragg as Fort Hood, and so on. They did not say what to rename the forts as, did they?

Next is erasing Washington and Jefferson from our collective memories and history. Rename Washington state and DC, which are named for a racist slaveholder.

The left are laughing their asses off right now. They are barely budging a finger, and the rest of the country is falling in line. Pathetic.

Are they going to change Fort Bragg to Fort Harvey Milk, or Fort Rodney King?

the republicans mostly work hand and hand with the dems in their effort to destroy the country. So this act of treachery wouldn’t be surprising.

Depends on what you mean by “weak”. I see them as the Uniparty, ideologically aligned with the Democrats; considering what they promised to get elected, that makes them openly dishonest.

The Uniparty RINOs are not appeasing anyone; they’re ideologically aligned with the left.

As I said in another thread, I don’t think this is a bad idea.

The names were part of a reconciliation effort when the north defeated the south, and we became one nation again.

We are reconciled. No southern state is going to secede now over this. No one who is alive today fought in that war, or knew people who died in the war.

Now, you might say “but people in the south today still remember the horrors inflicted by the north against us”. That may be true, but if you think that deserves “reconciliation”, then you can not rationally argue that blacks today don’t deserve “reconciliation” for slavery, which was similarly ended at the end of the civil war.

If we truly believe that names should be chosen for reconciliation, then the need for race reconciliation today is definitely more pressing than the need to reconcile the union and the confederacy.

If you don’t think we need names for reconciliation, then you should not argue that the names need to stay because they were done for reconciliation.

I know people strongly disagree with this, and I’m not going to argue with you, or say your beliefs are not valid or do not deserve consideration. I know more people hate the idea of giving in to a violent mob, to which I’ll say that our entire form of government, and the history of the world, is basically how people hwo have property, wealth, and status work to make sure that those who don’t never get mad enough to revolt.

In the US, we did that by free elections, by capitalism, giving every person the opportunity to BECOME the property-owning wealthy status person.

But that only works if your vast majority agrees they have that opportunity. When they don’t, you can either scream at them for being stupid, or you can realize that, if everybody riots and loots, we don’t have enough police or military to effectively stop them, and if you have to arrest too many people, you will tip the scales against you.

As usual the Daily Mail doesn’t know much about the US constitution. A committee vote doesn’t amount to anything.
It has to pass in both Houses.
A Trump veto can only be overcome by two thirds vote in both houses.

Got a link for that?
https://www.ftleerelocation.com/history says otherwise (so does Wikipedia, but I chose not to use that.

There is no difference between what they are doing and getting rid of George Washington everywhere. You are right. As absurd and sick as it is he was a slaveholder and he needs to be erased. I really hate when is happening.

how many of the left’s heroes were paying Chinese workers almost nothing and workers in other countries and in many places awful conditions to make that product?

Brutal child labor too. how many sports heroes are being paid to advertise items made in these places?

I am almost certain that if we knew one hundred percent of anyone’s life, that there could be no one we could look up to or think of as great men.
