I’m On Fire, Springstein.

“Hey little girl is your Daddy home,
Did he go away and leave you all alone?
Mmmm Hmmmm,
I got a bad desire.
Oh,oh oh I’m on fire!”

ROTFL

This would also make a good Biden campaign song.

Just listened to some of Biden’s outing today, so this was a good antidote. This could become the best thread of the day.

When I was a little girl, of 5, or 6, or 7,

the movie “Gigi” was a big hit. The soundtrack was an best-selling LP, and of course, we had it along with “My Fair Lady”, “South Pacific” and “Oklahoma!”.

I hated that song, because I was a little girl, and it made me feel creepy.

I was too innocent to understand why it did, but my instincts told me it was not nice at all.

Turns out, the musical was about a little girl in Paris being raised to be a “courtesan” (prostitute). I kid you not.

Sounds like that cartoon cat named Pepe Le Pew.
Everything he said had a double meaning.

Yes, Gigi was being trained as a courtesan......very common in pre-war Europe and still is.

They look at love differently than we do.....for instance if a man kills his wife after finding her in the arms of another man, by law, it is considered justifiable homicide.

But....big but...... Gigi said she didnt want to and told Louis Jourdan he was a very bad man for wanting her to be his mistress.

So happy ending......Jourdan stepped up asked her grandmother for her hand in marriage.

Amazing that the premise of the Collette book produced such an enchanting movie, although Chevalier’s, “Thank Heaven for Little Girls” might be construed differently on the world of pedophilia.

In her memoir, Leslie Caron wrote that Chevalier was a real crotchety old guy off the set, but when the cameras rolled, the famous lower lip curled up, and he turned on that magical charm of his.

It is what it is.

Nearly all the great musicals had adult themes, even “South Pacific” and “The Sound of Music”.

And who can forget “Showboat”? :-)

And after the sturm and drang, they all got married.

Ezio Pinza was an elderly, paunchy, over-the-hill singer when he was cast in South Pacific.

But he was transformed into a matinee idol with women hanging around his stage door by one song, sung when he thinks he's lost Nellie, "This Nearly Was Mine."

Have you ever heard the “Sam Schwartz, from the Bronx” joke about the adulation of Ezio Pinza? I think it was Myron Cohen. I tried to find it on the Internet, but I think the only place it exists now is in my memory.

BTW, I saw “South Pacific” live on the island of Kauai, where the movie was filmed. Some of the original cast members were in the production. It was small scale, but very nice.

I never heard the E/P story of which you post-—but I’d like to.

Pinza thought he was set for life when he got a movie contract——his first pic co-starred the beauteous Lana Turner-—he played a King. Turned out to be the biggest flop and Lana detested him.

Author James Michener was in the South Pacific at wartime. He saw or heard the name Bali High......the name resonated and he wrote it down. The song was a very poignant moment in the film.

This is cute——— you can hear Pinza singing Anema e core in the 1980 film The Blues Brothers, playing on a phonograph in the scene where Jake and Elwood visit landlady Mrs Tarantino.

The legend was Gigi director Vincente Minelli was such a perfectionist that in the Maxim’s scene he grouched that one player did not even know how to carry a menu.

His crew had to remind him the man carrying the menus was the REAL maitre d’ of the renowned Maxim’s.

My Dad was a Veteran of WW2 in the Pacific, and “South Pacific” was his favorite show. He took my Mom to see it when I was a baby...it was the first time they had ever hired a baby sitter. LOL!

The E/P story was a long dramatized joke with a Yiddish inflection, and has to be heard to be appreciated. I looked and looked online for you but it is nowhere to be found. It had to do with a Jewish Taylor from the Bronx who looked just like E/P and had to keep fighting off female admirers. I couldn’t possibly write it out from memory, as I only heard it once...probably of a late night show about a half century ago.

YIKES! I’m getting old.

I LOVE the Blues brothers Movie, and i know exactly the scene. :-)
