Third party spoilers can attract enough peeps to do significant damage.

Please consider, for example, the horrible creep that was Ross Perot. He knew just enough talking points to attract just enough GOPers/conservatives to a candidacy that was never going to win a thing ... and Perot knew it all along.

He was settling a score against Bush the elder. He was just that sick.
