Shoot you could deliver every other day and they could cut half their costs.

Only if the mailman walking his route is 100% of the cost and they can carry twice the load every day at no increase in time. Well a lot of the cost is in getting those letters and packages across the country into the mailman's bag, so doing it half as often doesn't save 50%.

I do most of my critical communication and bill paying online, however, I believe having a physical post office with its nationwide delivery ability is still very important, if only as a civilizational backup. Same with passenger rail. The federal government spends a lot of money on all sorts of worthless things, like university research into the mating habits of lesbian sea snails, or foreign aid to countries that hate us. Let’s cut that funding before cutting our post office.

90% here.

Almost all addressed to the spousal unit. I get virtually none.

We have the other house that we hope will sell someday.

The same junk mail shows up there.

I've heard that along with a Congressionally forced change from pay-as-you-go where today's postage pays for current retirees to a fully funded account where today's postage has to pay for current retirees plus current workers' retirement.

That is a very expensive change, but just about every local and state government will have to face it. A lot of retirement promises were made to unions without being concerned about how to pay for it.

Shut it down and restart it under a management contract with UPS or FedEx.

Would still save a lot. Also I understand they gave Amazon special, under cost pricing. In Phoenix they carry almost nothing. They park their truck, deliver a few houses and move their truck. Most of what you get in the mail is the weekly flyer which could be delivered weekly, and ther ads.

Email, pay by mail has made them almost obsolete. They don’t even try to change their business model and they let their union run them into the ground.

Requiring the Postal Service to fund its pension and healthcare obligations isn’t theft. It may have been naively optimistic to expect a goverment agency to be financially disciplined, but it’s not theft.

USPS is a BAD JOKE. Example: I am waiting for parcel with face shields from Amazon. Shipped via USPS, reported in a USPS facility in Flushing (Queens) NY at 6 AM on 4/5, last into a Queens Distribution Center 8 PM 4/10. I am in Pittsburgh.

Easy way to cut USPS costs. Half residential delivery staff, deliver every other day. NO ONE needs daily residential service.

Cutting mail deliver to 3 or 4 days a week would work for me. Definitely cut out Saturday delivery to save money.

If there were no mail delivery/pickup I would never be able to pay my bills, I’d have to deliver my payments to the home office.

I tried electronic banking in 2018 for about 4 months, then one day my Checking account was raided by some online hackers 2 weeks before Christmas. Bank couldn’t believe how they got to my account. They never did find out how it was done (or at least didn’t tell me how it was done). Only thing that saved my family was that my Saving account was not part of electronic banking. Needless to say I put an end to electronic banking.

Bank took over 2 weeks to do their “investigation” before putting my money back in the account.

Only a fool does electronic banking as far as I’m concerned. I’ll take the good old mail process anyday.

The PO would be in GREAT shape..

I’ve checked amazon packages against the rates I pay as a top rated ebay seller. many times, after weighing and measuring the package my cost is MORE than what I paid for what is in the package.

now, amazon could be shipping/selling at a loss.. but I doubt it.

every other day and staggered..

that way 1 carrier could still work full time but could cover 2 routes.

Let it collapse and let companies like FedEx and UPS to take over first class mail service.

Postal union caused their own demise

Affirmative hiring practices were much of the cause IMO

Our former mailman would leave the post office around 9:30 AM and we wouldn’t get our mail until 5PM or later. I could never figure out how it could take him that long to reach our neighborhood in his truck. We’ll, I discovered that he would deliver half his mail in the morning and spend the rest of his day at the Italian/American club in the next town. I complained about him constantly and nothing was ever done. God forbid he couldn’t reach his arm out ,far enough, to put the mail in your box because of snow. We were out of luck because he wouldn’t put one foot out of his truck.

I used to drive a kind of back access road in Indy. Mail trucks parked there and the mail folks took naps. It was an everyday occurrence.
