Last weekend, I said the same thing to two black women bagging and scanning groceries. They stopped what they were doing for a second with a stunned look when I mentioned that Hollywood was closed, and then they were most thankful and appreciative at my acknowledgement that they were vital. They then made a big production out of what I said, almost as if nobody had thanked them at all for what is currently a needed job.
Later that day I had to go back to get something else...I hit the same register and they gleefully welcomed me back, and said to their coworkers "here's the guy who pointed out that we're more vital than Hollywood."
I do not know if race entered into why this exchange between a white guy and black women became a real moment. But I doubt if many - if any - Dems would have said what I said...and THAT sort of thing is what scares the likes of Ms. Rice.
